Question GE and Motorola Radios - Police

Checking the govdeals.com website for my local area I came upon this posting. A lot of used, surplus GE and Motorola vehichle and hand-held radios, w/ chargers, mics, etc. Some are working, many are not. Approx 26+ radios and accessories.

I have counted in the picture 15 car radios and a dozen or so walkie talkie type. 11 base chargers and a gathering of other cords, mic cords, etc.

Did a search to see if anyone on here had broken a radio like these down before and came up empty. Any idea on the scrap value of these? Would the circuit boards be high or low grade boards you think for the in-car radios?

Current price is $25 (not including tax).

I am a ham radio guy, ke4ilg. That being said I know that the mobile radios(the ones that mount in cars) ususally have a substantial Al heat sink. Many also have an Al housing. The handie talkies are normally made of Al. I would think that the police radios would be similar. As for the boards I don't know. If possible take a look in person and get a good weight. Sometimes takiing a chance is the only way to learn somethings. Mike.

I found a motorola in the trash.....that thing was heavy. I don't do ebay, so I scrapped it. Lot's of goodies inside. But I did look them up on ebay. I hope to start selling there soon cause I came across some more and I'm hoarding them. Good luck which ever way you go Ticon.

If you're wanting to sell soon then you probably should buy a few things and start getting your feedback built. People like to buy/sell with people that have feedback. Or I can list your items. For a fee.

They will be low grade brown boards, possibly green on one side only. Like was said, there should be some decent sized alum. heatsinks. The really old radio's used to have a head unit in the car and the amplifier section in the trunk.

I'm passing on the radios. Purchased a couple of storage units at auctions Monday and just finished cleaning them out last night. Have a good amount of old stereo equipment, car radios, amps, and things like that to test. If not useable then I'll start taking them apart for scrap. All of the cases are AL or Tin. Will have to get my magnet out. Thanks for the info guys. Trying to "broaden" my options since storage auctions are just plain nuts right now.

On top of that paypal/ebay will hold your funds anywhere from a week to 3 weeks until you establish a good selling record + great feedback. Payments usually clear 3 days after the items arrive at the customers door, but I've had mine held for longer even with 100% feedback. Their fees do tend to pile up after a while too. Major pain in the butt to profit on Ebay anymore unless you've got a large inventory.

I look at ebay this way. If it takes me 5 mins to put the post up. then another 5 mins to package the item for shipping. And I make $5 for an item (after fees and postage) that would have made me $1 in scrap. (average hard drive is about a $1) Ill take the extra $24 an hour anyday.

Right there with ya PTS...I think of it as internet fishing and some days are better then others. Always liked the Ebay auction better but here lately been liking the randomness of "buy it now".

If i need something fast I use buy it now. If I dont I use the auction. ALL of my auction I put up I put a buy it now on it for usualy 5 bucks more than my starting bid. That way if someone has to have it now they can have it now they just gonna pay for it. I would say I sell most of my stuff maybe 80 to 90 percent by the people using the buy it now function. Heck I sold a DVDRW last night for $18 bucks 30 mins after I posted it. Just took that $5 PC i baught and made me some nice cash. The funny part was this was right after I baught those bits for $17.
