    A really old window unit..

Sorry for posting again on this subject but I didn't want post on some older threads..as the threads below are going on 8 years ago.
I have a 1975ish 8000 btu Whrilpool still in my window that actually still works! besides the vent flaps missing.
Replacing finally! and wondering what to do with it? Break it down proper with finding someone to properly drain the freon?
Scrap it whole? or break it down properly?
I'm a very part time copper scraper that only goes to the metal yard every 2 or 3 years for maby $50 to $100..LOL!
Only because this one big and heavy unit and thinking in 1975 it was built with alot of copper and AL..

See if your scrapyard will buy it as is. Not sure how much someone will charge to collect the coolant, so you can scrap it. Lucky me most of the ac's I find have had a pin hole in them and are empty of coolant....
    Better than the dump!

If it still works, why not sell it??

    Better than scrap value.

Well the thermostat is "worn out"?? At times I have to turn the knob back and forth till the AC compressor kicks in out of the fan mode and it has to be at least low 80's out to work. Another thing is that it is kinda loud and is placed maby 10 feet from my couch and right towards my ear. Don't get me wrong it's gets me by nice on a hot day.
Moving it to another window isn't a option.
It is built like a tank though! GreyT, LOL! this one's outer shell is steel. The inside is insulated heavy, don't know if it's fiberglass or asbestos and the inside AC unit itself won't slide out of the shell.
I actually did some searching to see how old it was and came across a sight that showed AC units through the years and was shocked to see a pic of the same unit in the 1974 to 1975 era.
Kinda hate to butcher it but i'm pretty sure there are no "Vintage AC" collectors..
    Thanks guys..
