Yard wont accept a drum of aluminum shavings??

So a friend of mine also scraps, he took a barrel of aluminum shavings to a large yard here in Denver and they wouldn't accept it unless he would take a check made out to a company instead of cash. He doesn't have a company set up... detail are kinda sketchy.... any thoughts?

You may need to get a license or you can open a bank account as a DBA(doing business as). Then get business cards for the name you or he is DBA. Mike

In Ohio, a person can only sell 1 catalytic converter a day UNLESS the check is made out to a business.

There are regs at our yards, too. I'm just surprised that they would include Al shavings in that consideration.

tell him to give it to someone who has a business that scraps if he just wants to get rid of it. I know Texas started doing something like that. They make you get registered in some sort of database or something at each yard you go to in order to get a cash card for that yard. other wise the yard has to print out a check for all regulated metals (anything besides light iron and aluminum cans). It made it more of a pain to take stuff to yards when I was in a different part of the state for something.

Go to your county clerk office with (if I remember right) $20 and get an assumed name registered. Then open a bank account under that name, and get paid.

    Not that hard.

Aluminium shavings is a mixed byproduct of a manufacturing process.
Its also covered in oily coolant.
The company that does the manufacturing owns the shavings and its unlikely that its going to turn up (legally) in the hands of a random person.
The company also knows what its worth, and produces other more valuable metal shavings too.

I guess that's why they expect and want to deal with a registered company.
