    Letter of downstream flow.

I have an opportunity to work with a company that deals in electronic data destruction. They have CPU's RAM and all sorts of computer components but require a letter of downstream flow in order to initiate the process. Their questions revolve around: Are materials separated? Is anything incinerated? Does any material go to landfill?

I contacted a local yard I have worked with about this and they have not responded (perhaps they view these as invasive questions? Or the EPA harping on them).

I would be interested in hearing anyone's experience with this process and how they proceeded. This is a new encounter for me so I want to get as much knowledge and advice as possible. Thanks!

unless you are dealing directly with a Specialized E_scrap recycling facility all you are likely to get is a letter certifying that the material will be handled in an R-2 compliant manner. anything more is risky in several manners on the part of the involved scrap yard

see what they are certified as (R2 etc)...then look up those certifications to see what is required of them...it will list how their downstream people must handle the items they send to them. If you can comply with this, then answer their questions, if not, then you will have to move on or, if it is a lucrative opportunity, see what you will need to do to become compliant to work with them.

I have never had it happen...I have been asked if I have handled items to HIPPA standards for a hospital, but it didn't even get that far...they picked the company that already did their shredding to handle their hard drives...but I get everything else.

Just watch how you give them a letter from your downstream, so they don't just start selling to your downstream and cut you out...

^^^^yes this...they do NOT need to know "trade secrets"...ie who you sell to. They just need you to certify that you do things a certain way. NEVER EVER tell them how your business works (ie who you sell to).

Precisely this. I was thinking this may be a clever way to feel me out and cut out the middle man ( me).

I was always under the impression that R2/RIOS and or esteward certs were sufficient credentials as they are scrutinized by the EPA. I don't see a need for a convoluted letter.

Those of you who are R2 certified; Do you ever have companies or individuals request a copy of your certs? Do you comply with that request? Or does it simply have to be taken at face value?

    Thanks for all the information!

There are very few secrets in our industry. I know many of you might disagree but when people ask us questions they get a full answer. We have set our business model up to where I can go toe to toe with most other companies based on what margin we are willing to work on and our method of payment. We supply downstream paperwork and info without flinching and much concern.Nihilobstat you are more than welcome to call me and I can guide you on how to handle this in a very simple manner and debunk a lot of the fear you and others have about it
