    Scrap transmission

I have this transmission with no gears or anything, at least I think as Automotive has always been a weak area for me. I used the magnet test and it sticks to the pan on the top right corner(probably meant to be on the bottom, just pictured this way) and not the main body of it. I read that they make these out of cast aluminum and cast iron if I recall correct. Will a magnet stick to cast iron? I looked up the model number several times but was unable to get the exact makeup. It is an Aisin aw co. model no. 03-71. Any input appreciated! I read cast aluminum has a good return. Not sure of cast iron. If it is cast aluminum what would it be graded as being?

    Scrap transmission

Its cast aluminum mostly, my yard buys the large ones by the unit and small ones by dirty aluminum unless its stripped. There is probably some small pieces of ferrous thst you may be able to cut out to upgrade

    Scrap transmission

Like most things it depends on your yard, since yours is striped it may be worth it to cut the little amounts of steel off and get clean alum. Call your yard and see what they consider it to be as is.

That's what I figured I may have to do is take off the pan for instance. I don't yet have a yard and I plan on calling around when I go to scrap everything I've been working on. I just want to make sure I know what questions to ask and everyone has been a big help!

So j started breaking this down and a few bolts inside I can't undo leaving very little non cast aluminum inside but still a little bit of odds and end components. It looked so clean inside j wonder now if someone wouldn't have rebuilt it but I screwed it up now :/ I had never seen one dismantled though but it was a Beautiful piece of work! I feel no matter what I'm going to get the lower end of all the scrap I have right now but I'm hoping there is a dirty cast aluminum category or somethjng

    Scrap transmission

pick up a bottle of degreaser and a nice heavy sledgehammer. if its cast aluminum the sledge will make "cleaning" it a breeze.

the oil / tranny fluid residue and little bit of iron are what stop it going as cast aluminum (0.48 / #) vs tranny (0.17 /#) or dirty (0.09 /#) for me.

besides breaking it makes it lighter to handle and less likely to get dowwn graded as it would be less recognizable. if still worried about downgrades and got a chop saw or grinder add a few lawn mower flywheels cleaned up and other misc items. volume = fewer questions.

I definitely need a sledge hammer! I was able to break some off with a hammer but certain parts are a little thicker. Hopefully I'll have a pile to show a picture of in the next few days!

The guy I spoke to told me it's usually between 10-20c a pound but I'd get more if I drained it and what not which I've already done. I also have some breakage from a smaller tiller motor that seems to be cast aluminum so hopefully I can get a sledge and mix it all together

... you do realize "aluminum breakage" doesn't actually mean broken aluminum...right? It means "dirty" or "irony" aluminum, aluminum with foreign attachments. My yard would buy it as breakage since it's already drained and partially dismantled. You might want to call your yard before you start smashing things with a sledge...

"Aluminum Breakage:Aluminum recyclables with greater than 8% of foreign attachments but less than 40%. Aluminum recoveries of a minimum of 50% - 60% must be achievable. Materials with lower recovery rates will be graded as sheet iron"

In retrospect I wish I hadn't taken anything apart since it turned out to be so clean inside. It being curbside I figured it had to be worthless but I'm quickly finding out ppl throw out lots of goods! I was wanting to break it just to get it down to 100 percent cast aluminum though j don't know how hard it will be. I did think breakage was as you stated though, broken aluminum casting lol that's why I have so many questions starting out that read throughs still leave me in the wrong. I have it drained as far as I can tell and it just has a thin lubricant layer on the interns.
