how far will scrap yards go to pick up good quality scrap?

hello everybody! just a quick question here.

If i had say 20,000lbs or more of pure mining grade scrap steel how far have you known/heard of a scrap yard going to pick it up?

I don't know what others do, but I go 200 miles round trip on a regular basis. Of course the farther a yard has to travel, the more it cuts into your pay.

Call some yards and find out. And I agree with above...the more resources they have to put into it the less profit you will receive.

just what the seniors around the shop refer to it as lol, its gotta be a high class of steel if its getting used in mining although im not entirely sure which exact class it would be

and ya, there is nobody in my town that buys scrap steel, the next closest city/town is roughly 6 hours away, would be a long haul for a scrap yard but definetly worth their while if i got upwards of 30 tons or more!

I just used Google maps to find Labrador City. Now I can say I know someone who lives in the middle of nowhere!

Yup, it's a small mining town with no scrap yard and is a complete pain in the arse to get anything in or out of the town, makes it really easy to get ahold of a lot of scrap metals, just a matter of having the resources to get it over the long isolated highway to the closest town in Quebec!

Question for you then.... How does all materials for mining get into the town? Also guessing you have the equipment to load this scrap?

A lot of the material needed for the mines is shipped in on the train that the iron ore is shipped out on, aside from that companies are closed minded towards production here and everything else is an after thought if thought of at all

And yes I have the means of loading it all, but not for hauling enough of it to make a 20 hour round trip with nothing but steel to the nearest scrap yard

I don't know if it possible to do.... but guessing if you had enough steel that a yard might be willing to ship it out via rail cars...

Remember that saying " you're all dressed up, and nowhere to go"?
That may be the case.

Maybe you could check around. Being a mining town, there must be a semi driver that does the 20 hr. round trip occasionally. If he's going down empty, you may have a load for him!

who would have thought that iron ore had more value than the scrap iron.

Seems like if you can get it and arrange freight by rail to refinery thats what I would do. It will need to be by a rail spur or at least tracks.

the mines own the only railway in and out of this town, no chance in hell id ever get scrap steel out on it either if it messes with their production lol, other than that the closest town east is a 5-6 hour drive but wouldnt do me any good because there is nothing for scrap yards out that way since its even further from civilization than i am here lol, and the closest town in quebec is a good 8-9 hour drive over a highway in worse condition than you can imagine.

main reason i even asked about scrap steel (not that its worth anything to anyone here because of the means you would have to go through to get it to a scrap yard) is because i plan to process the carbide out of the mining bits, but in doing so i need to find a way of getting rid of the steel afterwards

Someone mentioned hiring a trucker. I think you could find one to do the run for you. I'd stay away from Uship myself tho. Lots of unlicensed an uninsured carriers there. Sure you could find one that would work for you from UShip, but me I'd go with a full licensed, insured, an permitted trucker. Might cost you a bit more, but hey, they got the truck, trailer, an the experience to haul.

You never know who/what you'll get when dealing with UShip.

Contact dartmouth metals here in ns they are currently doing a big job and have there equipment up there
