Scrapping without a truck??

Hi everyone..I'm fairly new to scrapping and the boards and wanted to see how many of you currently scrap without having a truck and just use a car? If you only scrap using a car, what types of items do you usually scrap? This is where I'm currently at. I love scrapping on the side, and want to eventually get a truck, but only have a Chrysler 300 to scrap with at the time being until I can save up my scrap money to get a truck. Just curious who else here scraps with only a car and how you do it I'm kinda stuck on the direction to go and what to look out for. Thank you so much for the replies, you guys are always very helpful.

Well, I have a truck but what I'd suggest is going after batteries and car (core) parts, such as generators, alternators, starters and radiators. Computers/electronics. Then, the first thing I'd plan on is a hitch for the car and a 4x8 or 5x7 trailer. Then a truck which you could put the trailer on. Then a dual-axle trailer. Really, if you go at it, it won't take long.

Take the trunk lid off that Chrysler and you basically have a truck lol.

do what you can with what you got. Carload truckload vanload it's all the same just a different number of trips to the yard.

agreed a used trailer and hitch would be my next step unless a good deal on a truck was around.

Haha...yeaaaaaaa almost!! Thanks for the insight Mick, I always value your advise and love reading your posts, always very helpful. That helps weigh my decisions on a direction to move in and helps motivate me that it can be done starting with what I have. I was trying to think I f I should work on getting a trailer first then a truck, and I think that is what ill work on. Would you guys even take in shred/light iron with a car?? I don't see why not, but just getting an idea on what the more experienced would do. Thanks again.

I currently scrap out of a car. it's a Ford taurus station wagon so it's not too bad for me. I take everything I can fit or tie it to the roof if it doesn't. I just try to scrap within ten miles of my house so when I get a full load it doesn't take to much extra gas to come home and unload and go back out.

as for the steel/ iron if you have a smaller car, I would maybe grab bed rails, microwaves, air conditioners. Don't miss out on all them swiffers that people throw out they are aluminum lol.

Ditch the car..get a mini-van! Seats are made to come out of it...lol.

Isn't there a thread on car vs truck vs van? I know there's a few folks who scrap by car, like one of our fearless mods used to if I recall..Mech that's your cue!

Go for the trailer upgrade, less maintenance costs and cheaper tires for those inevitable nails in the tire from the scrap yard.

I'm pretty sure you can get a trailer hitch for your car. I saw a Cadillac Cts pulling a little 4 X 6 trailer yesterday. Pretty funny. If you really had to, you could strap stuff to the roof, they can support a lot of weight apparently (I don't recommend THIS much weight though):

If I remember right, the Chrysler 300 is pretty spacious on the inside when you fold the seats down so you have a lot of room to play with. Until you can get a truck or trailer setup, I would stick with Non-ferrous, e-waste, and really dense iron (Like brake rotors and drums, T-posts from landscaping, etc. Those get heavy fast).

oh the look I got from my wife when I showed her that vid.(we have a jetta exactly like that one) she was NOT amused......I do use it to run non ferrous up to the yard. Most I've had in and on it is about 600 lbs.

First rule...don't show momma her car being abused.

Second rule...Don't show momma how the car can be abused for scrapping.

Third rule...if you didn't follow the first 2...run like someone just dropped gold in the street!

Well, my reliable Taurus has worked pretty hard for me, anywhere from escrap to buckets of non-ferrous to steel shred.
Just traded for a Ranger pickup but still need some small things to put it on the road.

I'm not one to have had an easy path in life.

In the past, I've scrapped in anything with wheels.

Lots of stuff that I found in the garbage (baby strollers, wagons, bicycles, you name it).

Before I had a vehicle at all, let alone a truck, I would pay $5-10 bucks for a ride down the road to take a load in.

I've come a long way since then.

When I see a guy carrying scrap over his shoulder and down the street in a wagon, I don't scoff.

I've been there.

Now I have my business, answer to no one, and love every second of it.

I'll never forget where I started though.

So stuff that baby full, strap it down, and stuff some more in there!

An like Primo said...get to the yard however you can, that's all that matters. Safely of course. If you want to scrap bad enough you'll find a means to get it to an from where it needs to go an be.

This is true motivation for me to keep chugging along with what I have to work with and get to where I want to be. It's nice to see all the hard work put in to something we all love.

and we've all been their too.....can't afforded to leave any scrap behind but you really don't have room and really can't afford the un safe load ticket.
