Neighboring states to California, Nevada and Arizona have places that buy cans for more than there aluminum value, plastic and glass as well. In California the least they pay is $1.59 lb. California says that's 29.1 cans to a pound. More like 31.8 @ $.05 per can I figure... But some cans are $.10 each (24 oz. and up) so I guess this is how they come up with there numbers. Many places pay the CRV and Aluminum Value, but aluminum is dropping fast and the places are reducing what they pay over the CRV.

I believe it is a federal crime to transport redemption cans/bottles across state lines to collect redemption value that was not paid on them.
it is definitely a state crime.
it is considered fraud
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

What's wrong with selling for a higher price? It's not against the law in Arizona to post a buy price above what the metal value is! All that Arizona states is if the cans are imported to Cali then it would be up to them to file charges. When you now drive to California at the check points they now ask if you have empty cans or bottles! Or Plants, Fruit and such! Not sure how or if these guys do it! I can tell you its not a little guy, has to be a big fish with places in Cali that they own... THe good news is California recycling rate on cans is above 100%Originally Posted by MattInTheHat

What's wrong with it, is that CA collects CRV on containers sold in CA.
Then people get some of it back with the idea of recycling and keeping it out of landfills.
The out of state containers did not get paid on in CA thus CA looses out on that.
Same reason why we have to keep track of where our CRT TVs and monitors come from.
Same concept.
It's financed through the fees you pay when buying new electronics.
If you bring in a truck load from out of state CA did not collect any fees for it.
makes perfect logical sense to me.

CRV fraud from out of state is a big problem. Why the law was changed, we used to be able to sell 500 pounds of CRV cans and now only 100 pounds per day per recycling center. I agree with Hobo this fraud is by big opperations, both business and organized crime are moving tons of can into Cal.
