NEW TO SCRAPPING? READ THIS: Build up your horde of magnetic and non-magnetic metals in two piles until you have a better understanding of the business. Magnetic material has low value and is mostly always steel / shred / short iron. Read old threads about non-magnetic metals and ewaste (and how to sort them), but don't forget that they generally have absolutely no tolerance for contamination (screw / iron / foreign material).
Got shred at $215 and cast at $300 today here in Las Vegas.

Shred up again.... 300/ton one place and 315/ton at the other. guess thats what happens when 2 yards are next to each other and keep trying to top each other.

I ran in a clean sheet load yesterday. 680lbs for $119. and then i found more on the way home. Get rid of it and it comes right back lol

Shred prices have not moved up yet here in Montreal, but some Toronto yards currently buy at CAD 395 / mt (USD 280 / ton). Both cities have a mill in their greater area and both have a good transportation network. Cost of life is indeed higher in T.O. and prices are always better there, but I feel like prices are kept artificially very low by the lack of concurrence around here.
Montreal being a port city like Chicago you should be getting at least as much as I do, probably more. I get an inflated price due to dealer volume but even if you don't get dealer pricing you should still get more than me at any port city.

Stop the presses! Shred prices have moved up in the boondocks: CDN 205 / mt on the island and CDN 175 / mt in the suburbs. Better late than never.

I got $0.00 yesterday and happy for that.
My two closest scrap yards are a two hour drive each direction. One is East and the other is South. Both are a drive through the redwoods and over a snowy mountain pass in the winter. But in my very small town there is a guy that will only accept ferris of any kind. But he refuses to pay for anything. Everybody in the county knows they can get rid of their scrap steel without having to take it to the transfer station and having to pay.
Now why am I happy? I am retired and a scrapper. I only want to keep aluminum, copper, brass and e-waste. We all know that we have to go through a lot of shred to get any amount of the good stuff. Yesterday I probably had 200-250 pounds of shred and plastic. If I got 10¢ pound that could be $20-25. A round trip costs me $40 in gas. See the logic? Every few months I have to go to the town east of me for my wife's specialist. So I load up most of the back of my HHR with the good stuff and make a quick stop at that yard. They pay pretty bad, but it is a least something for my troubles. (the yard south of me pays even worse)
A month ago I found a yard in Las Vegas (JJinLV is a member of this forum) he pays real well on copper so I have started mailing my bare bright and #1 to him. His extruded AL is a good price too but I have to do some shipping pricing to see if it is worth it.
Another good thing about my steel scrap yard in town is people sneak TV sets into his dumpsters and he has to drive several miles to the transfer station to get rid of them. He gives me all his CRTs and flat screens (and so far, 3 scrapped video slot machines) I scrap these for all the goodies and then I take to the transfer station. They do not charge me for this. So I even make some money dumping my shred.

Shred still at CDN 175 / mt in the suburbs. Copper and aluminum prices are ok, but they could be higher. They're currently a bit lower than what was paid last summer.

Steel prices down. Im not surprised at all. every 5 minutes i see scrappers around when im out, use to be no one but me and the other guy on my dumpster route.
Shred was 315/ton now 265/ton down 50/ton
Clean sheet iron was 370/ton now 310/ton down 60/ton
HMS/Cast was 350/ton now 300/ton down 50/ton
Auto cast was 400/ton now 350/ton down 50/ton

I was unsure to go at the yard next Monday, because I didn't have a full load, but after reading Greytruck's posting, I decided to go dumping my shred this afternoon before the prices drop. Surprisingly, we're up $25 at $200/mt ($210 / mt on the island). They're slower to raise their prices, but they seem slower to go down too (not like the prices at the gas stations...). Most of the last times I went there, they're always loading prepared steel in a trailer, but shred heap doesn't get bigger and they must ship that at a different time. It is usually a good sign that stuff doesn't sit there too long.

Shred down again.
shred was 265/ton, down 30, now 235/ton. down a total of 80/ton in almost 2 weeks
clean sheet iron was 310/ton down 30, now 280. down a total of 90/ton in almost 2 weeks
copper down also at the other yard. #2 was 3.68/lb now 3.33/lb
So i guess we are slowly going back to normal pricing. i would hope so. i liked these out of control prices but the amount of "scrappers" now is ridiculous around here.

In the five plus decades that I have been a scrapper, there has been only three times that I can remember when scrap prices did NOT top out for the year within two weeks of Easter, so this price drop is NORMAL.
