Feel your pain!! A couple of yards in the local area have gone up $10 a ton, but not all. The yard I go to mostly is sitting at $110 a ton, so seeing some of what folks here are getting I am considering myself lucky.

This is why watching the market, and checking prices daily at your yards is vital.
Prices can go up for a day or two than drop again.
Iam hoarding, but check prices everyday. Especially steel since it takes up a lot of my yard space.

I keep piling more steel onto my trailer, and watching it bottom down further. No great rush to haul it in just yet.

Slowly going up, it's going to take some time to make up the $70 - $75 ton drop here from Feb. and I do not think we will see $230 ton sheet iron for a long, long, long time.

Went to my steel yard today, only because I have more than a ton of light steel (tin) and my bin was full. When I got there I went straight to the office because I needed a guy to come to my truck with a fork lift. First upsetting event, the old manager left (went to work for a competitor), new guy acts like he can care less that I need a fork lift, tells me it might be 20 or 30 minutes (they close in 30). So I ask him can you look up how much steel did I bring end last month and what were the payouts (I know, but I want him to know). First thing he tells me Robert (old manager) was doing you real nice, can't even do half of that, steel "tanked" in February and it's worse in April. I say just what is your HMS and light steel rates. His answer was $30 a ton for HMS and $15 a ton for the light steel. I told him have a good day and on Monday I'll find where Robert went to work. I'm not that much in need of the cash today.

OK it took me longer than I thought it would, but I located where the manager went to work at. He went to work for a much bigger company, hes the non-ferrous manager at this company. I talked to him yesterday on the phone, told him what his old employer wanted to pay me last week for light steel ($.0075 a pound) and HMS ($.015 a pound), he told me they really don't want to buy steel right now (obviously). He asked me how much did I have (about 2 tons) and could I help him out with, by selling him some non-ferrous. I haven't sold any #1 Cu all year, so I said sure.

This new place is different, three different yards that take up an entire city block. You go into one place to get weighed (scale yard does CRV, Cardboard and Plastic), then you go unload at the ferrous yard, then back to scale to get weighed empty. Take your ticket to the non-ferrous yard, weigh that type of metal on floor scales and then get paid at the non-ferrous yard for everything. The good thing is they have plenty of help and everybody was real good with making it effortless as possible. Evan though you have different yards, I think they were much faster and the bottom line they pay better.

    #1 Cu $2.30 Lb.
    Yellow Brass $1.50
    SS $.50
    6063 $.65
    HMS Steel $.065
    Light Steel $.045

So I made $147+ more just on the light steel and very happy to have a yard manager that wants my business. The best news they buy circuit boards too!

    Today went excellent!

Billings(Mt) market has finally started a upward trend, all be it very slow. Things I sell have moved up, car bodies $70/ton, prepared iron $80/ton, appliances $40/ton. Time to take a few(cars) in to buy more!
