Just posted about this in another thread but it's relevant here too:

Cans pay significantly more out here in California ($2.00/lb) so virtually every bum does it. The deposit charged at the register (California Redemption Value or CRV) is 5 cents for all containers 23 oz or less and 10 cents if it's 24 oz or more. At 32 '12 oz' cans/lb you're actually making 40 cents a pound recycling them yourself.

$2.16 in Ca. with coupon at my yard. I must say it is awesome when I turn those cans in but, I really hate looking at the receipt from the grocery store after paying CRV!

In Central Mesa Az it's a buck a pound for cans. The place we sell to pays a dime a pound more if they are smashed.

Here in Mesa there are Mexican buyers near by that are paying $1.00 a pound for cans. One guy told me if we crush them he will pay $1.10 a pound. The scrap yard I sell shred steel to pays about 40 cents a pound for cans. The Mexicans are paying 45 cents a pound for plastic bottles.

I got .60 a pound. I am friends with the owner of a local yard and once it's all said and done they done they pretty much break even on cans after you take into account buying bags water and so on.

I asked one day why the yard pays more for cans vs. other aluminum. They told me that they get quite a bit more for the cans because companies like Budweiser have machines that recycle the old cans into new cans and pay quite a premium for the cans. I'm not sure they "break even", that doesn't make much sense. It would seem they would just adjust their price to be in the black.

I think Inbev/Budweiser purchases lots of UBC's every year! Metal markets, scrapyards and recycling centers know this. The price is high as the demand for UBC's are high. If they could make a cheeper product from virgin sources they would.

Our yard they rip open the bags and dump them into a mesh hopper where the small trash/rocks/etc. can fall out and the cans go up a conveyer past a large magnet. They drop into a large mesh hopper that can be offloaded into the compacter. They make 3'-4' banded square cubes out of them. They stack the cubes along the wall until they get a semi load. That's where they get the better price.

Oh man am I getting robbed! We have the .05 deposit here so I get that for most cans, but all other cans (iced tea, etc.) only pay .16/lb. Seems criminal to be that low.

$2.15 here, lol. It's pretty competetive here for aluminum cans...i just bought some scales from a CRV center that went out of business.
