    SMF Scrap Break Down Contest!

    SMF Presents
    The Scrap Break Down Contest!

We hope everyone is ready to get their hands dirty and have some fun, because the next SMF contest is finally here!

We're going to introduce a new category of the forum for Scrap Break Downs, and to kick it off we decided to hold a contest for the best, most helpful scrap breakdowns from forum members. The winner with the best thread will receive a $100 Visa gift card from us!

All you need to do to enter is create a thread detailing the process, and the results of breaking down a scrap item. We want to know if it is worth the time to take it apart or if it is better to scrap it whole, with as much detail as possible (time spent, difference in money, types of metals separated, etc). Pictures or video are a requirement for this contest so keep your cameras and cell phones handy.

    Here’s how it will work:
1 - You can do a break down of any scrap item. Lawn mowers, electronics, pools, wire, tools, junk cars, snow blowers, gaming systems etc, you name it.

2 - Break down the item into as many recyclable elements as possible. Make sure to take pictures as you go (Because pictures (or video) are required for the contest, and we love pictures.)

For example - Does it have a motor? Does it have brass fittings? Does it have stainless steel panels? Does it have elements that could be prepared (like removing steel screws from clean aluminum, or cutting the ends off a copper coil)?

3 - There are no specific requirements as to how you should conduct your break down, or how thorough you should actually be.
Just do your thing! That's part of the fun! Maybe you'll learn something while conducting your own break down or learn something new from the similar methods and break downs of others.

4 - If you’re breaking down something specific (like a specific brand of server, or a car/truck, appliance etc), please include that in the thread title.

Also, you know the saying "there is more than one way to skin a cat", well that remains true in metal recycling so don't hesitate to put your own twist on breaking down any scrap item. Especially if you might have a better, easier or faster way of doing it.

5 - All images and video used must be your own, and taken by you FOR this contest and reference this contest specifically. You must reference the forum and the contest in your images and/or video to be eligible to win the $100. To avoid confusion, "Scrapmetalforum.com Scrap Break Down" will be sufficient.

For images, you may either: Write "ScrapMetalForum.com Scrap Break Down" with a marker on a full sheet paper and place it beside your scrap item as you take pictures - Or you can download then print the image attached at this link and use that in your pictures instead.

6 - You can submit as many different break downs as you want.

I'm sure you're just as excited as we are, so let's go over the details so you can get ready!

How the winner will be chosen:

Your goal is to get as many "Thanks" from other members as possible. After the submission period, 3 finalists will be chosen according to the number of "Thanks" received by members. From the 3 top thanked break downs, we will hand-pick the winner!
(If a single member has more than 1 break down, only the most thanked break down will be considered for a finalist position)

To add to the excitement, we're also going to give two SURPRISE PRIZES away to the runners up! That's 3 awesome prizes up for grabs and all you have to do is break down some scrap, what metal recyclers do best!

When the contest will begin and end:

You may start submitting your Scrap Break Downs on 12-27-2014, a Saturday which is 2 days after Christmas. A link will be posted then, which you can use to submit your threads.

Once submitted, threads will be open to thanks, posts and replies as normal just like any other thread on the forum.

You will have until 1-17-2015 (3 weeks) to submit any break downs for this contest.

After that, submissions will be closed to make sure members, both new and old have plenty of time to check them all out and thank their favorites.

We will pick the winner on 1-24-2015!

Keep some scrap handy, because one item in your scrap pile could earn you an extra $100!

Good luck, have fun and of course, be safe and always wear your gloves!

The SMF Scrap Breakdown Contest is live!

You may begin submitting your breakdown threads by using this link http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/newth...ewthread&f=442

The threads will be posted in the new "Scrap Breakdowns" section which you will find in "The Metal Shed" category of the forum very shortly.

    Good luck!

    Disclaimer/Legal stuff

No purchase is necessary. However a forum membership is required, if you're viewing this message as a guest, you can register a free account here.

After the top 3 break down threads have been determined by the total number of "thanks" received during the contest period, we will (ScrapMetalForum.com staff), at our sole discretion select one winner for the contest.

Well, after some lengthy deliberation, we have chosen the winner.

It was a tough call, all 3 of them are very thorough and useful to anybody who may come across them in their ventures as metal recyclers!

That was the goal of this contest after all, we wanted to do something that wasn't only fun and interesting, but also provided value and would be helpful to everyone.

So the winner with our favorite breakdown is...

    ...

    ...

    ...

    Sledge!

    Thread: http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/scrap...apartment.html

What we liked the most about this was that it was very 'out of the box' and creative in a way that it was both abstract, and yet specific enough to become a very interesting and well rounded breakdown.

In the event a house or an apartment building needs to be broken down for recyclables, just refer to this thread and no scrap will be left behind!

Devinthascrapper and pjost, we will message you soon in regards to the 'surprise prizes' for the runners up.

Thank you to the Admin for putting up an AWESOME contest!
    I am humbled and grateful!

I wish to thank the "Awesome 35" as I deemed them that got me to here:

Abuilder, armstrt8, ElectricLiquidators, fivegallonbucket, gorven, greytruck, gustavus, hobo finds, Hypoman, ItAllAddsUp, jiffy117, junkfreak, kevath, KzScrapper, logansryche, Longhairboy, miked, mikeinreco, musicman57, NHscrapman, numbers, Ohio Scrapper, Otto, Patriot76, pjost, Pnutfarmer, RichMann, rocco33, RustyDollars, sawmilleng, ScrappinRed, SparrowMetals, streetdoc560, SuperDave, travistemple202020

I am grateful that the thread was something that sparked some interest and I will continue to add to the thread as new apartments become worked on. There is plenty more scrap in an apartment.. but we can all only pull what we are able to on each one.. So look forward in the future to seeing items such as:
    Copper Pipe pulls
    HVAC Pipe pulls
    Water Heaters
    Possibly Furnaces
    Front and Back Doors
    Different and weird Light Fixtures
    Ceiling Fans
.... and sometimes.. I find things that "Ya just never know what you are going to get!!"
Stay tuned.. and thanks again to Admin AND The "Awesome 35!!"

Congrats, Sledge! I enjoyed your thread a lot. I'm all about getting every little stinking ounce of metal that there is to be had. You nailed that (slight, silly pun intended)

Thanks to Sledge, Devin and pjost for your entries. All were very informative, especially to a guy like me who does pretty much just automotive junk.
