That's another good tip.. I have to say that with all that pressure in the vise I have had pieces flying when I pop the fronts from time to time. I just got an 8lb mini-sledge for christmas.. so I may give that a whirl- would indeed cut down on time!! Thanks!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Thank you sir! I coin myself a "maximizer" meaning I work to maximize every opportunity life hands me.. whether that be a scrap outlet or something else. I work to seize those opportunities I am given and prosper for my family! If I don't know how to maximize something.. this contest thread may just answer my questions! I had a few wall outlets, I just took them tout the yard and they payed me "plug" price which was $0.10/lb. I am going to try and take them apart next time I get some. I figured they would take a while to do one. Thanks for the new tip!Jon-
Thank you.. and to answer your question. I have to remove them from the wall.. so I'm getting paid my billable time to do so. Once I get them home and put them in a vice, I'm looking at about 30-45 seconds each to break down. So it of course isn't a "set the world on fire" amount of $ in the scrap.. but all of it gets added to its respective sort bucket and it all adds up over time. If left as is- I'd get sheet steel pricing and miss out on all the brass and copper $ in them.. and since I'm breaking down in my spare time, making some coin in my spare time is just fiiiiine with me.

No problem!!! I figure at $1.50/lb for Brass and $2.80 for copper, as well as the .09/lb for steel right now.. we've all got to "get ahead" by breaking them down vs a "plug price"
I've never actually been to a yard that pays a "plug price" But you'll profit a bunch more with either the vice trick or a rag and BIG F HAMMER (BFH) idea that Otto Posted!
These are sort of like cracking nuts! You toss the shell (plastic) and get all the meaty goodness inside (brass and copper)

The things I try and sell as "plugs" are the little connectors from electronics, other than gold ones

For those of you breaking down outlets and switches, Keep your magnet handy.
You'll find only really old switches and outlets still have solid brass screws. A lot of newer ones will even have one brass and one steel screw for some reason or brass plated steel. :P

Thanks man.. Well I will say that I am the minority. At the place I have my standing contract the owner has 4 other guys who rehab his property.. they are all his employees. Over the years I have seen countless guys come and go. Each one I tell them "Hey when you pull this kind of stuff- just set it aside for me, I'll come and get it" They never do. I find myself when I take a run to the dump trailer on site.. just jumping in and purging this kind of stuff. They always just toss it.
My philosophy is "if they aren't smart enough to take it and profit from it.. then I will!" I have to remove this stuff regardless, doesn't take but a second to throw it in one bin or bucket and take it home to sort and break down. It's a great perk of my work!
I did the same thing this summer. I wirked on a fair grounds during the off season doing maintenacne and ground works, and when I was picking up he garbage from the fair I got like 3 or 4 pounds of aluminum and I saved every old nail I found.

HA HA! Wow that one (of my own words no less) flew right over my own head! No sir.. I literally got an 8lb min-sledge hammer from Santa..
The irony of all of the joke is my nickname "Sledge" was bestowed upon me in College when I took a long handle 10 lb sledge and drove it through the top of a TV, all the way through it and the picnic table edge it was sitting on..
I say your "catch" was a pretty darn good one!!

The plugs are polarized. The black wire usually goes to the dark / brassy screw. The white wire goes to the steel / whitish screw. Green goes to ground.For those of you breaking down outlets and switches, Keep your magnet handy.

Just a heads up .... in this area, the last guy that did any kind of electrical work on the place is liable for the whole electrical system in the building. It's more for insurance purposes and figuring out who is on the hook if anything goes wrong later. If you're doing re-hab work it's almost better to call in a licensed & insured master electrician. That way you've covered your a$$.

Yes I know color code having been in the business for 44 years!
The facts are most of the connection screws these days are steel no matter what color they are.

No offense intended bro. There's no way for me to know how much time you had in. I'm sure you've seen some pretty scary electrical things buried inside walls. I know i certainly have. It was a miracle that those places didn't burn to the ground.
Point being: There's no way of knowing what's there so don't sign off on it by being the last guy to work on it.
