yea i have seen people say both ways but seems like taking off the aluminum is way to go
If you cherry pick the motherboards, they will only be worth low grade price,, usually $.10-15 a lb.
The heatsinks are weight on the mb's, making them 4.25 a lb. Why take the weight off to make .45-.50 a lb. out of the alum???

I think most buyers want you to remove the heavy metal or they will down grade them. we need more detail on this from some of the buyers. for example tell exactly how you want us to prepair the board for max price like $5 per lb. nice round number :)
We took 287 lb of motherboards to our buyer and what we pulled was; processors and heatsinks and any plug in ic chips. Any other heat sink that was soldered to the board stayed on.
