Florida laws regarding selling scrap metal

Hey all, I was away again on another hiatus, partially due to the fact that scrap prices were so low that I was doing it very infrequently. In any event I recently moved this past fall to Tampa Bay from Long Island (where I was at the last time I posted here) and was curious as to how state law in FL deals with the sale of scrap metal. I know in NY ID was required and the license plates of all vehicles coming in and out of the yards were recorded to make tracing potentially stolen material easier and I can imagine it MIGHT be like that in FL as well. Are there any other things I should be aware of being that I'm pretty new to the state in regards to the sale of scrap metal/materials? I see a LOT of junk trucks here in Pinellas County where I'm now at, especially in the Pinellas Park area and I found there are a good number of yards in central Pinellas. But before I call them for pricing and possibly collect I obviously wanna be aware of any special laws here first. I'd definitely appreciate any and all necessary info.

I am not sure of the laws in your state, but I have sold material in various states. I provide my drivers license which they make a copy of, address, phone number, and titles or vin # of the vehicles that are sold and never a problem.

If a vehicle is older than 1990 no title or vin# is needed. I have crushed numerous vehicles and never questioned about their origin. Most of this is assumed to be a result of hauling to the same yards roughly 60 miles away.

Call one or more of the local yards and ask them their procedures for selling scrap. They get new people all the time. Mike

Speaking of batteries, I actually went past a place on 34th St in the northern part of St. Pete (an auto repair shop, not a scrapyard) where he buys batteries for $10 a pop. I guess that 2 battery per trip limit would apply there too?

Where in Florida is that a law?? I've never heard of such a thing.

The scrap yards I deal with accept gaylords full of batteries and all the catalytic converters I can furnish. Catalytic converters are not a common commodity in these parts so the scrap yards pay per pound, not quality. As a consolation, they have provided contacts that specialize in them. Therefore I fill a Gaylord before I sell.
