Free is great and barter works too.

I went to a local computer shop the other day to deliver some video cards and a sound card and the guy said he was tired of tripping over all the parts towers in the back and could I help him haul them out to my truck. Of course I said sure thing, not only that, all you have to do is point and they are gone. I had to make two trips and ended up with 17 towers, two laptops, a few dead power supplies, ram and cards. I also took two monitors and some cardboard boxes that I can use for shipping. I've been getting a list of needed parts from him and checking my stock. When I find something he needs, I just drop it by no charge. Last week I gave him some 133 ram and before that five DVD RW drives. We both believe we're getting the best of this deal so it's working great.

He told a friend of his about me and he called me needing a Dell 24 pin power supply. I happened to have one and gave it to him. He said he's going to gather up some junk for me also.

While I was loading this load I got a call from another shop that had a customer with some dead towers who wanted to get rid of them. There were actually two towers, five monitors several keyboards and mice, two UPS and two loose 1 Gig ram. This was from a peanut buying point that was clearing out old stuff. That gave me an idea so I checked with another buying point and they gave me three towers 7 office phones one monitor and an electric pencil sharpener all dead due to a power surge.

Another business on the same street had the power surge hit them too, so I'm going to contact them next week.

In all this has been a pretty good week.

Good job Pnut...just started doing some bartering as well. I answered a cl add from someone looking for computer parts. Figured it might be a good source to buy some dead or outdated stuff. Turns out the guy goes to a school near me for computer repair and does it as a side job. He was looking for harddrives and cd/dvd drives, I worked out a trade for my 40 gig and under harddrives. For every two of his bad ones I trade one working one. He tested them and he got 10 drives and I got 20 in return. Also swapped 5 dvd drives for 10 of his and swapped 9 sticks of 512 ram for 27 sticks that he had. He also needs working power supplies. I have a crap load of those ...but I already clipped all the wires;(. I Also told him I would sell anything he needs at a decent price.

Hey Brasscatcher, glad to see I'm not the only one up this time of the morning..... too bad you already clipped those power supplies, but I bet you'll get more pretty soon. I love trading and like your idea of two for one. I bet they just can't believe that you'd trade them a good hard drive for two busted ones. People here can't believe that I am buying computers that are any condition but burnt.

I'm working on a CL computer repair guy also. He wants laptops and I don't have many at all, but I never know when some will appear at an auction.

Maybe the guy you're dealing with can get you an in on all the stuff they use for students to work on. It might be a good idea to provide a few computers for them to use in trade for the scrap.

A time ago 1993 i had a CO CO Tandy computer and worked it and got nice work done (spread sheet work) any way i asked a computer guru at the time is this old thing ok cause win 3.0 was around . I remember his answer till this day ."There will always be a better computer but as long as your computer gets the job done use it but when you need more then it can deliver then it's time to get some thing better. "
SO with that said bartering old parts for trashed ones I feel might have a long life possibility first many good parts are scrapped off the market and the few who save will reep the rewards as current computers from as far back as 1995 have abilities for just printing docs computers from the 2000's will be appreciated for plenty more time I am using one now (from the trash) a laptop but to bad my kids shorted out the key board with soda so i use it with a USB keyboard now

Good thinking using a USB keyboard. I have some IMAC USB keyboards that have two USB ports one on each end. One of my friends hooks my keyboard into his Playstation when he needs to type messages instead of using the point and click on the screen pad. The extra ports let him keep everything plugged in.
