Buy at a scrap yard, sell at a Recycling yard?

Basically I watched this reality TV show, about scapping recently and they bought scrap from a scrap yard and sold it to the Gershow recycling yard in Ny. Their site: Scrap Metal Buyers - Long Island, New York, Suffolk Nassau County

Now here's my dilema. The Scrap yards sell copper for 3.00, and the recycling yards buy it for 1.40.

I'm missing something here - how is this done? I know he buys from scrap yards abd sells to recycling yards but i can't figure out how it's done. But on the show, he did buy brass, maybe that has something to do with it.

This is not totally on your subject but I buy computers from a trash company and break them down and sell off the different components.

So the trash company picks them up saves em for ya and then you buy em? Holy crap i got to call around here

Thanks for your response it made a lot of sense to me. I know theres a myriad of possibilities, but what would you suggest me buying.

So all i gotta' do is buy at the recycling yard and sell at the scrap yards. Anythiny im missing to make this work?

But now do you expect to buy at the recycling yard for $1.40 and sell to scrap yard for $3.00? Basic economics tells me if the scrap yard is selling for $3.00, they aren't buying at $3.00.

My guess is you would now find the recycling yard will sell to you for $2.80 and scrap yard will buy for $1.50. These guys aren't in the free storage business.

Let's try to remember, daily life is called reality. If they have to put "reality" in the name of a TV show, it probably isn't reality.

Yea..alot of those reality shows are scripted. The repo ones..Lizard Lick towing, etc. Key thing with these reality shows and Trutv is a perfect example...It's based off true stories. So take that "reality" with a grain of salt. ;)

Well guys the point is, is this possible? Is this a method thst scrappers use - to buy low from one yard and sell to another?

Its very easy I have done it with Batteries. I have found an outlet that would give me a great price on lead acid batteries and boght them for about $8k and sold them for $15K, had to rent a truck to do it but its worth it.

ScraperRick...First off, there is two P's in Scrapper. Second, Buy low and sell high. Many of us do it whenever and wherever we get the chance. At auctions there is typically some scrap, at garage sales or at places that have metal as a byproduct of the business they run. Little creativity goes a long way in this biz.
