Buying Appliances

Mostly started doing this because I wanted to hopefully set up a somewhat steady stream of basic scrap metal around my schedule. Goal was to keep it simple, keep it close and maybe make some networking friends along the way. So I posted an add on Craigslist offering to pay $5 for major appliances within about a 5 mile radius of my home and they needed to be in the garage or driveway when I get there.

So in the past 9 days I have picked up 14 appliances and have found that a little less then 1/2 of the people didn't want the $5, they just wanted to able to call someone for a pick up instead of kicking it to the curb and posting their address for all to see. Some have other stuff that gets tossed in and judging by the handshake and the smile, repeat biz should be a sure thing. Not a huge money maker but so far it is meeting the expectation.

Are you doing refrigerators too?

Yes, hope to have certification and equipment in the next couple of weeks. I have a place for storage inbetween my house and the yard.

Good Job KZ, I told a couple of people i know that i would give them some money for old washers and dryers, ect. and like you said, most just want them gone and will even give ya something else they dont want.sence I started parking my scrap truck infront of the house and now my neibhors yell down the street to me to get rid of scrap they would have thrown out if they didnt know I did scrap. I once was putting scrap in the truck parked in the street and a lady stoped and gave me a metal rack from inside her van. I didnt know her and nor did she live on my street. That was a greaty score

Yes and it's only 10-15 minutes from the house depending on traffic. BTW, that looks to be a G5 unit I was asking you about earlier.

That should do it for you, they are pretty much bullet proof. Does your yard have a remediation area?

I'm not sure, I will have to check.

I've set up the remediation areas for couple of yards. It's a win-win for everyone.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what exactly is a remediation area?

An area where all refrigeration units are put unless they are certified that they are evacuated.

KZ what section do you put add, services or somewhere else. In sacramento their are thousands of hauling and yours gets buried in 1 hour

Denver is all about the environment and I would imagine we are not far away from passing legislation about tagging fridge/freezers so it would be nice to stay one step ahead. Might have to give you a call one of these days Joe and pick your brain.

I use this handout when I visit yards, it's easy enough for them to understand. Then I help them get set up to meet the federal guidelines.

Great info Joe, right now a signature is required that the system is empty...kind of a "don't ask, don't tell" type deal.

You need to keep me in mind for that KZ when you get calls for my side of town ill go do the pickups.

$5 for any appliance is a no brainer.....Good job to everyone

I been around. Just been trying to keep quite. Seems to me that lately if a person speaks their mind on here too much they get shutdown for however long. No matter how much they can help others. Bunch of elementary school b.s. IMO.

Look at the bottom of a post (others) to the left side and there's a small thumb with "thanks" right beside it, just click it.

Off the top of your head, any idea on a estimated weight on individual stoves, washers, dryers and fridges? Just curious. Whenever I get them, I always throw them on with a truck or car I'm hauling in, the yards pays $25 a ton less for light iron then cars.

Dryers 100#, stoves 125#, washers 150 #, refrigerators 175#. That's averaged across about 1000 pieces.

Thats weird i have tried the exact same thing for 3 months with 0 results

Those numbers seem about right just by using my back scale. Older stuff is on the heavier side since it was built better with thicker skins. Yesterday I brought in a washer, dryer, stove and double wall oven and it ended up being 590#...easy $50 after costs. Dbl oven was a nice compact beast that I'm thinking went about 200#. I pull wires, motors and heating elements on stuff before taking in.

The Appliance Posting netted a AMC 360 out of a Jeep that had rolled today. Guy had pulled it out and it was on a cherry picker but a sudden move left him with no where to put it. He said the engine was junk and the tranny might have life left but I'm not about selling something that takes a bit of effort to swap out and then might not work out. I did pull the Edelbrock manifold and DUI performance distributor tho, and they will be an easy sell.

Funny - Dryers weigh the least but I'll bet a lot of people here would prefer to get them.


If you haven't done so, you might want to consider doing a little troubleshooting on those appliances. I always ask what is wrong with the machine and get as much symptom information as possible. I then search the Internet for a fix. If I can fix it for less than $25- 50 (depending on what type of appliance) I'll do it and then sell it. I once had washing machine that the person said was leaking turn out to be only a matter of re-clamping the hose. I then sold it for $150.00. Sometimes people are just looking for an excuse to buy new stuff. Service tech tells them that it will cost such and such to come out and look at it and the owner balks.

Great Job KZ! Really like your Ad. I have been doing the appliance pick - up for about 2yrs. Now. I started off not knowing what to do with them except scrapping them. Then I started learning different ways to make better money with them. I have agreements with several appliances buyers in my area. Each buyer wants different makes and models. I haven't had to offer paying for them yet, and recently started charging for dishwasher & Tv removal. Funny thing is, my business increased after I started charging? There are lots of ways to work the appliance removal? Talk to Apts., Motel - Hotels etc. I have one friend that swears he is making on average $750.00 a day doing appliance delivery services. He charges about $50 - $80.00 for delivery. Then charges $15.00 disposal fee per each old,broken appliance they are replacing. Then he goes and sells the broken appliance to repair shop for $30.00 to $50.00 dollars. Thats about $110.00 - $$130.00 per job. He charges $250.00 for delivery of new commercial freezers to restuarants. Any how, yall get the picture! LOTS of potential in the appliance removal services. GOOD Luck and best wishes KZ.

we pullled our appliance adds weeks ago, covered up with too much stuff, we still get calls tho, have 4 to pick up on monday. we have a better than scrap value use for a dryer, we use it for a chopsaw table and chest freezers and reffrigerators can be used for all sorts of storage and even tool boxes. congrats kz on your success
