Anyone ever tackle one of these before?

This is one of those things that I had to admit defeat on, because I just couldn't think of a tool that would get that precious copper out. Sure, there's not much in there, but every little bit helps me ;) Plus it would make me sad to have to add this to my "mixed steel" pile, when it's worth more separated.

The copper shown is the frustrating type that is glued together, much like what you get out of CRT monitors - and as you can see, is very hard to snip through (compounded by the fact that it's wrapped around those green plastic rods). It's just sitting here taunting me, so if someone knows the trick, I'm all ears. I do not have access to a sledgehammer, and there are no removable screws to work with here. I have no idea how they got this thing together!

you should be able to knock the back off of that thing, that shouldnt be going in your mixed steel pile anyway, your yard should pay you motor price for it the way it is.
after you get the back off you should be able to take a hammer and chisel to it an knock the copper out of it.

Those are easy once you know how to do it. That green ring is just pressed into the houseing. From the center bearing just put a flat blade screwdriver under the inner edge of the green part and pry it out. Takes only a few seconds. Then you can just unwind the copper from there if you like. I sell them as motors myself.

If I'm prying from the white arrow up, do you pry individual ones, or is the whole thing supposed to pop out?

I know, it's probably comparative as far as price (and time spent tearing down), and they do take electric motors (but I typically don't have very many that can't be broken down to earn more from). It's just bugged me to have the copper in there, this has literally been sitting on my shelf for months, teasing me, till I found this site.

Just beat the hell out of it till it comes apart!

And I must ask what is it that you have all over your lips?

I think the green lipstick is pretty cool!

Some of that glue on copper is like concrete, I have walked away from unwinding or snipping a few of thought myself it was taking so much time.

yup thats one item I gave up on, tried most every thing.

I found out the scrap yard takes car batteries too, so long as you drain the acid out of them first.

They obviously have no idea what they are doing then. There is multiple yards all around me, and not one has that requirement. Acid of any kind is a very dangerous business, so I would not recommend it.

I don't know what the yards do with them, but what I can say is this. My yard pays me a flat rate depending on the size. From there, it gets loaded onto a pallet, and as the pallet goes, it gets shrink wrapped. Then sent to their main plant in DC somewhere for processing.

I got that it was a joke.

However, not everyone has common sense, and the last thing anyone needs is to read on the news or internet about some guy or woman trying to empty out battery acid.

Sure George, I didn't get it until zito explained it and I for one, am not ashamed to admit it. We are not all as quick as zito and Matt.

Yeah, if someone here starts draining batteries in their driveway, there really is no hope left for the world :)
