Normally not the best way. Compact items are good shipped that way. If you are shipping RAM or CPUs that may be the way to go, bit otherwise you will want to use a different shipping method.
In fact, if anyone has a large quantity of compact stuff, they can fill a $10 or $15 flat rate box, lets get some numbers. This could be a great thread. I have been wondering how many pounds of connecters people may be able to fit in a flat rate box.
I am shipping some telecom boards as a trial run...First time I have used one of the buyers on this forum and i could only fit around 12lbs of these boards in a large flat rate box
Doesn't seem that great to me but I want to give it a try

How many pounds are you shipping? That will make a big difference of what you will use. I sell to one of the forum memebers and he arranges pick up with fedex.
I currently have one box filled with mother boards and weighs 100lbs. Its too heavy for me to pick up and put in my truck and take to a shipping office so pick up at the house is great. Mike.
I have about 25 lbs of boards but they would not all fit in this flat rate box
You should be able to ship it via ups for about 1 per pound if you don't insure it. Just don't get the box at the UPS store.
Best thing to decide about shipping is go to the 3 major shippers websites. They all have rate calculators on them. If you dont care if it takes a week to get there. Then USPS parcel post is the way to go. Averages out to be about 75 cents a pound to ship with them insured. For ruffly 90 cents a pound you can get it shipped threw fedex or ups. Only ship flatrate box for ram and small stuff is what I have found for us small timers. But since I started using ewasted for my boards I just let him send me a FEDEX label :)
I imagine your paying the shipping, you just don't know it. If their profit margin is as tight as all the buyers say then they cannot afford to eat the shipping, it's coming out of your end. But I'm no expert.Quote:

Buyers know up front the shipping is coming out of the balance due.... no tricks here. It is done a convenience.
I shipped a gaylord through YRC a couple of weeks ago and it costs about $200 for the first 500lb and then about $100 for the next 100lb. that comes out to about .40/lb and .20/lb.
I think it averaged about .33 cent per pound. Does that seem typical?
You can get around 22 pounds of memory in a medium USPS flat rate box and around 30 pounds in in large USPS flat rate box. I just sent some to Ewasted and had a great experience with him. Very Fast.
That is correct he does take it out of end profi but his prices negotiated prices with fedex are better then I can get myself. They could be better and I hope he is negotiating more with them. But the box gets there in 3 days instead of 7 with parcel post for about the same price.Quote:

freightquote.com has been good to me for large crates/pallet loads but you'll need a commercial address to pick up from - they don't do residential pickup.
Ed Booth is my sales rep over there, he's very helpful with explaining the process, getting freight class numbers, etc.
FYI you can setup a fedex account yourself and depending on the volume there are some discounts available. Fedex is partnered with Shiprush.com and offers a free program that automatically prints labels, etc. Its geared towards ebay but works on regular shipments as well.
Another one to check out. A few companies I do business with use them. Their prices are good, but aren't nationwide.

Mechanic, nobody accused you of that :) I had to explain that i tell people upfront the amount (assuming they are accurate with weights).
For those big boxes. If you look at the bottom of the box there is typically a "legend" It tells max weight, crush weight, etc. I learned this the hard way. The drop odd I use has a fed ex delivery guy that is a stickler. If I have 45 pounds in a 35 pound max weight box, he will not pick it up. Then I get called the next day have to go get ir repack in a different box, take it back again the next day. 2 days lost.
So make sure you are useing the right box or you may lose time on your shipment if you have a picky or lazy driver.

I created an account with FedEx which is free and gives you a discount. You can also print shipping labels from your computer. I usually ship boxes weighing between 50 and 120lbs so FedEx ground seems to be cheaper than UPS or USPS. Actually, I don't event think you can ship anything more than 70lbs via USPS, but I might be wrong.

You are correct 70 lbs max limit. But ship 1 100lb box fedex and 2 50 pounders usps parcel post and see the difference in price. This is what I come up with using the online calculater from denver to PA.
80465 to 15501
fedex ground 3 day is $89.44 for 100lb box
ups ground 4 days $98.45 for 100lb box
USPS $38.95 per 50 pound box x2 is $77.90 for & day delivery.
SO in my opinion if time is a factor fedex is way to go. If money is factor USPS is way to go. above prices are without insurance. I would suggest putting insurance on any boards you ship with USPS if box breaks open in transit and you loose something from it without insurance then its your loss. I speak from experience I lost one of the 2 cats I shipped to focker this way.
Also on side note you can get better prices with USPS as well if you use you paypal account to create the shipping labels. Not to mention youll help me keep my dayjob. Wait on second thaught Ide rather be scrappin.
I keep shoving that ebay out the door so you guys have job security. Cost me $70 in fuel to drive my 370 lb load to Cleveland. Took about 8 hr total and met some really nice people.
