I got an email from my ad on Craigslist about some metal pipes that need to be removed. I don't know what they were for but they're pretty heavy. I'm wondering if they will shatter, how much they weigh and if I will get hassled over them at the yard. I know a lot of things like this are usually owned by the state. They seem like drainage pipes.

I would suggest that you find out rather than ask us to speculate, preferably before you remove them. If they are drainage pipes, are they connected? If they are connected, what is going to happen when someone flushes the loo? Are you liable to clean up the mess?Quote:

I've concluded it's very likely cast iron. They're not connected to anything and the guy that contacted me seems to be well off. The land, perhaps at one point, was going to be residential. It's been very abandoned though, it's a local garbage dump. People bring truck loads of their garbage back there and dump randomly.

Okay, I can assure you they will not shatter. At least not by my hands. It seemed they were becoming flat. Sparks going every where each hit. I was thinking of renting a ratchet chain cutter.
If your hitting them with a hammer and there not breaking id bet todays first load 1920lbs there not cast iron.

I think they steel not cast. Rent a gas powered chop saw for the day. Pry them up on a 2x4 and then cut. Or use torches. You aint gonna bam bam those......

Yes, impossible to shatter. As suggested above, a gasoline powered abrasive cutoff saw, with metal blades is the way to cut them.

It looks like 8" from the pictures. Probably 18' lengths. Scroll down through the publication I linked there, and you'll find the weight given as 400 Lbs. per length, or 21.1 lbs/foot.

Hi Backwell, I would try to find someone looking for this pipe to install , it is quite useful and pricey to purchase. I have installed quite a bit of it in high flow industrial irrigation systems. this stuff is very heavy for its diameter.The last pipeline I used this on was 60" diameter and weighed 9-10,000 lbs per joint. I dont know what these pipes your looking at weigh but be prepared to work moving them. Good luck , Bigjoshl .

Backwell, I really don't know about price, if you can find a weight per joint I would offer them at twice their scrap value and see what happens. In my area here I know several pipe suppliers and would talk to them about selling, you may have someone similar in your area. Whatever you do with these you are gonna make money, even if you just scrap them they are worth quite a bit just on weight alone. I hope you find what you need, Bigjoshl.
