Thats a good video, I like how you just took them as they came easy or not, just like it always is. One question, does your yard not care about the paper and tape wrapping? I always worry that they want it pristine.

Really timely for me. Just got done tearing down 60 industrial light fixtures and started on the 28 ballasts. I've been stockpiling transformers and will be starting on them tomorrow or Tuesday. Just now figured it up and have around 200 HEAVY transformers (not counting the little ones from computers). I was planning to use the Sawzall to cut one side of the copper coil and pound through the core. But I've got a wedge and small sledge I use to split wood (pretty much like your sledge) so I'll be trying that first to see how it goes. I've got a vice that weighs over 100 pounds so probably use that to hold them rather than two transformers.
I use your hatchet method now as well. ever since I saw it in one of your other videos. I went out and baught a new hatchet and 2 pound sledge that day.
Actually faster with air chisel. brupa brupa done..lol.

Alright, you've convinced me...I need a hatchet. I think my dad has a few old ones, I'll see if I can have one. I never would have thought you'd need a hatchet for scrapping but seeing you use it with such "finesse", I'm convinced. Nice work!
I may try the air chisel as well. I'm sure it's quicker but man I hate going out to the shop, turning on the compressor, losing my hearing for 20 minutes while it fills up and then getting the bajesus scared out of me when it kicks on again mid-hammer-swing.

I should mention that hatchets that have a relatively flat edge one that is not so curvy works best and don't buy one that is made for splitting wood. if you have an old hatchet try sharpening it like a flat chisel on both sides tho. that works best.
I think ill try the air chisel but I don't think that will work as well. plus the electric bill....

Has anyone ever tried using a shop press and a splitting wedge (or even the hatchet head) to split these? I was thinking of welding up a fixture but then again I don't do many transformers.
I tried using a splitting wedge. Didn't work well. Not sharp and too wide.
Until now I was using a grinder to take of the weld for the ones like that and then just beating it off with a hammer. I don't have a hatchet but a chisel worked pretty well. Just had to go up and down along the weld instead of getting it all at once like with the hatchet but still was quick and didn't have to use the grinder so definitely a plus.

I always check the wire prior to tearing down my transformers to make sure that are copper because at 14 cents a pound it's not worth it if it's aluminum in my book.
I grind my welds then hammer and cold chisel. Now I just need to find a steal of a deal on a hatchet and hand sledge handle. Yes I broke the handle smashing apart transformers all ready.
Let me clarify, 14 cents a pound for whole transformers
Most of the transformers I get are not the welded type, so I use a band saw to cut one end off.
For E's and I's I put on the driveway so the layers are slightly angled with the ground. I then take a 5 lb sledge and give it a few whacks. The layers will slide left towards the ground breaking up the epoxy/wax/glue. You can then pull them apart easier. It's still not great, but it works. An air hammer also works pretty well. I've found anything that can break up the glue helps tremendously.
I find that if I have a thin sharp axe head, I can slide it into the centre of the 'Interlaced Iron core and split it.
I then keep going by bashing the axe head with a sledge hammer and the axe cuts the Copper windings in half.
It also stretches the windings, making it easy to just pull the two 1/2s out.
The Iron cores get put into a empty Freon bottle that's had the handle area cut out with a angle grinder (and some slits in its base to let water out). Once its full I replace the handle, turn it 45° so its locked under, tack weld it in place, and sell it as HMS.
