I guess it depends on how big it is.
Some people thing there crap is worth $100s....If I was you. I would send them an e-mail sayin that you will pick it up but only at blank price or for free as the worth of it is low for scrap. So if they just want it gone to give you a call.
I hear from most people about 4days later after there ad is flagged a few times an no phone calls.
Yeh. Ten bucks plus fuel for an ac unit? Wonder if they still have it. Wait it out or email them and say when it's free call me. I do get a chuckle out of some. Lady yesterday didn't want to start a scrap war with her metal pool with surrounding wood deck. She wanted the deck down and removed before the pool was taken. Heh?
I work CL pretty hard and get everything for free. You can tell when not to respond to the add.
Here's a good one (copied and pasted):
I have a Kenmore electric dryer, about 7 years old and a GE washer both do not work. Truthfully I cannot remember what is wrong with the dryer and the washer works but sounds like its screaming and doesn't seem to wash that well. They are in my basement and you would have to remove them, bring a hand truck or 2 very strong men. I have a side screen door which YOU would take off the hinges as well as put back and then about 6 wood steps straight down. If you feel like fixing, or turning in for scrap these are for you! Someone once told me the scrap yard will pay about 30 bucks for a washer, I just want them out of my basement asap!
LOL @ 30 bucks.
Man, I'm getting ripped off then.
Sounds like a nice lady...
I had a call similiar to that a week ago. A washer/dryer in a basement, downtown boise (capital city), and they wanted $15 for it all. I had to drive about 14 miles there, it took me about an hour to get them both out, took the door off, then put it back on, and loaded it. The guy complained it took me so long, then asked $20. I told him i could offer 10, like i stated when i arrived, he got angry, said he'll call the cops and say i "stole" them. I thanked him, told him to have a nice day.
Backed up the truck, put them appliances right in his front yard. By put, i mean, slid them out of the truck and let em crash.
Gotta love stupid people.
People are crazy. You did all the work, and he wants $20 for it.
Wow hoss thats rough but stick in there. There are plenty of normal people out there who know that giving you their old junk is payment for your hard labor. I could see if it was some aluminum or copper perhaps some other more expensive metal... Dont let one bad day get ya down :) we all have them.
Hey Hoss, you might think about having some stipulations and a contract for just such occasions. Say there was a scratch on the wall and you get blamed for it then sued. Maybe you could charge people if you have to remove things from their house and have them sign a contract covering your butt. That way, if you ever did(assuming you don't) decide to get business insurance, that would cover the cost of your insurance. If they don't like those terms tell them to take it out of the house themselves! What a jerk!
That's good. Yo can't trust anybody anymore. Only the people complaining that people don't have any honor are the ones who do, and their doing all the work!
On the Boise, Idaho CL.
Not scrap, but still ridiculous.
"I have a 10x10 concrete slab and concrete ramp that I need out of my back yard. If any wants it please let me know asap. Thank you.

Yea, I'll run right over and load it up in my pickup!! LOL
Who would want that???

I think I will wait till the heat of the day before running over.
I actually need those!
Hilarious! I thought about this one. What do you suppose he did next? Repost to craigs saying free scrap appliances in front yard, come & get 'em? Makes me wonder. Suppose you had a buddy to send over there and ask the guy if the junk out front is up for grabs and offer to take it for free. Would he have given them away free? Then again, if you have a decent buddy, you wouldn't want to suck away his time, too.
Enjoyed your story. Some jobs turn out to be a waste of time. Ok, back to work.
KZ....be sure to wear your best suit !
Just got back from the cleaners with my suit Dee and saw IdahoScrappers post...I should have done the one hour express clean. Yeah IdahoScrapper, they were still buried in the yard. They said they would help which is more then what most folks offer.
There was another add earlier for a big box of dead AA batteries...missed that one to.
Wow, quite a response! Haha.
Things went south, WAY south, the day after. Apparently the guy was SUPER angry that i dumped them in his yard. He called the cops, told them. They called me. I explained what happened, sounded like he was taking notes. He asked for my address, that he wanted to talk to me face to face. I'm thinking "great, a simple stupid person is going to land me in jail for some unknown reason". 2 cops show up. They asked me AGAIN what happened. I was EXTREMELY busy tearing down TV's when they showed up. I asked them if we were good, can i please get back to work. They told me that "We might be seeking vandalism charges against you".
Long and short, they got my information again, for the 3rd dang time, told me id be hearing from them soon.
As if i wasnt busy enough, im going to have to fight this *#&$*#*@&#*$&#*@&#*#&@* thing. This is what they call "vandalism". "2, semi deep trenches in his front yard where the grass was moved away because of your anger. This is vandalism. You may have to pay for the damages"
I need a beer.
EDIT: Double post, dont know how that happened.
Never ceases to amaze me what you will find on Clist...This was under Free Stuff.(Sorry no pic)

Well you learn something new everyday!
You might be on to something there MDG.(NOT literally in this case)
I saw one the other day. For sale. printer/scanner. printer does not work, but it still scans. $20
had to share that one.
Hoss, that story just sucks.
Hey Hoss, if this lands you in any trouble then I have lost all respect for cops. Not that I have much for them as it is.
That guy sounds like the kind of prick that wouldn't have been happy no matter what you did.
You could have balanced the washer on your head, served the dude his money on a silver platter with one hand and handed him a cold drink with the other and he still would have pi$$ed and moaned.
Hope it turns out for the better. Keep us posted.
Here's one from the computer section of the KC Craigslist.

I'm wondering if maybe he's got some 5.25 inch floppys for sale too....
Well Sunday is usually my day for relaxing copper play. Was sittin out front drinkin a beer unwinding the 85 pounds of windings i have.
Received a phone call from aforementioned jerk. He told me that he is "sorry". That he told the cops to "drop the case". We talked for a minute or 2. He said he understands that life is hard right now. He ended the call with this: "I understand things are hard right now, and i should not be making things harder for the underprivileged. I hope you find Jesus soon, have a great night"
Honestly want to eat this guys face.
Hoss
Tune this guy out. He has illustrated his level of ignorance and that doesn't need to have any negative effect on you. Don't let a bad apple ruin your master plan.
Well, at least it is over.
As discussed elsewhere in this forum, what comes around goes around, and that guy will get his in the end. At least 5-oh is out of the picture.
Oh wow. He hopes that YOU find Jesus? Where was HIS Jesus attitude when he was whining and threatening with the cops?
These holier than thou types really chap me. Such hypocrites.
I was going to say you can't reason with these types, but at least he dropped it. Something made him come to his senses.
Just brush it off and get to the next gig.
Hoss,
Send him a bill.
I've seen some ridiculous ones. The box part of a box truck was one. The guy who had it wanted 2200 bucks for it, it was mostly wood and tin.
I just tried to look for it but it's gone now, but there was an ad for 6 boat engines a guy found at the bottom of the local lake. He wanted 50 bucks a piece for them for "Parts"... I offered him 5 bucks a piece because most of them are cast aluminum and I figured 2 engines would double my money if cleaned correctly. He told me I was a crook over the phone.
The last one was yesterday. Guy posted an ad for scrap in the barter section. 2000 ft of coaxial cable, 150 universal remotes, and other miscellaneous cable gear. I asked what he wanted in trade, he told me a car. ::facepalm::
I was looking for this thread yesterday. Now I can't find the ad:
In the Free section, someone was giving away 50 cords of firewood. For those unfamiliar with firewood, up here it's worth at least $200 a cord. So someone was giving away $10,000 worth of firewood. Yeah, right.
