I swear, people must think that those in the know(I'm not one of them), are just sitting, waiting at their computer to answer random questions like the above. Perhaps the forum could get a Fereral Grant to fund such an operation. Sorry if anyone was offended by this early morning sarcasim.
hmm, a simple search might do the trick.
If there is any palladium in a CRT computer monitor, it will be on the circuit board, mixed in with any multi layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC's). But only a very very very small fraction of CRT monitors have those in them because they are very expensive and unnecessary. CRT monitors will only have low grade boards, as aposed to the high grade boards found in computers.
Make sure you have the monitor plugged in when you poke around in there looking for that platinum. That is the type of thing that can cure you of jumping onto a forum and asking questions without looking around or introducing yourself.
love your post parrothead....lol
Well done sir.

it was a generalised question it wasnt to bring out the smart a** people
Somethin my 60 year old dad says all the time....
"Act like a dumb @$$, ya git yer nuts slapped"
are you looking for palladium or platinum? might help to figure out what element you are after and the proper way to spell it...
Well, I for one found this particular thread, while doing a search for pallidium. I also wanted to know where to find it in a compurter board. typed in Pallidium, this and one other thread showed up from the search, neither one telling anything at all about where it is, what to look for, or anything. Just one talking about someone shipping out comp. boards, and this one. I know I'm new here, but I've searched for a lot of things on here, some I've found, others I haven't, but it could be that that is the reason he asked. I myself have put in the work to find things, which is why you don't hear from me often, but, most times I come to dead ends, and end up looking elsewhere on the web because I don't want to be one of the "newbs" that gets eyes rolled at because I asked a question. I've been reading the forum for about 3 weeks, and have wanted to get into the discussions because everyone here seems like a pretty cool bunch of people, but have been leary just because it seems there are quite a few that hard on the new guys. I'm not tryin to start an argument, or cause any hostility, but I came on here trying to find ways of increasing my "know how" and my raising my bottom line, and yes, I have found quite a bit of useful info by accident, but the stuff I've tried to find out on purpose, well, it's like trying to find a copper fitting in the steel pile at my yard. I can understand why some of the guys come to the "veterans" and ask questions. When you have actually tried to find the answer yourself, and have run out of ideas, and finally ask someone, just to have them criticize you for doing so. Maybe I'm just gettin old, maybe I'm just from a different kind of place, but this isn't the forum it seemed to be. I thought it was a bunch of good 'ole steel burnin, copper strippin guys and gals. I think this will be my 4th (maybe 5th) and last post. Again, not tryin to be an a**, but just trying to bring out the other side of the story. There have been many things I've looked for on here, couldn't find, and wanted to ask so as not to throw away something that could be worth something, but I kept my questions to myself because of the verbal "hazing" i've seen the others get. As for my question on Pallidium, well, it doesn't seem so important after having typed this. You guys have a wealth of knowledge between you, and knowledge is something that is meant to be shared. I wish each and everyone on here luck in they're search of that "big load" I'll just go back to the mountain.
Many have agreed that the search function could use some help. Using Google to search the forum works better because it zero's in on phrases people search by rather then words, IMHO not for sure what the deal is. Personally I think we need to use the Header for threads and posts better.
I think I said it best in another thread when I said the search feature as it is now kinda sucks, but don't ask me how to fix it. It needs to zero in on phrases and not on the individual words. No offense intended to Admin. Don't run away mntnman, it'll get better or easier, or maybe we need to get over ourselves a little.
by goin back to the mountain, I didn't mean so much that I'm leaving here, as that maybe I've already said too much, or spoken "out of school". I'm blunt about things, it's a fault of mine, and therefor it may be better for me just to sit and watch as opposed to opening my mouth.
Don't be like the 2nd guy...

I agree, the search function is limited in what it can do. The problem folks have is when someone signs up and their very first post is "where can I find metal?"
Really? Heaven forbid that person get stranded somewhere and need to find water. Woe is them.
We just want people to take a tiny bit of initiative. You demonstrated that you have when you couldn't find what you were looking for. Granted it was spelled wrong, but you attempted to research it. That's all we ask. Tip: if you aren't sure how something is spelled (and I wasn't on pallidium/palladium), run it through Google.
well, mtnman, if your blunt about things you'll fit right in....most of us have gotten into trouble with someone else for that. We've all agreed lately to be a "kind and gentler" forum. You were reading an older thread !! Hang in with us.
Who all agreed??? Where was I when this all went down?? I guess I can forget about going to the bathroom anymore tonite. See what happens behind my back,,,Quote:

they are located in the micro mmc capacitors located on the circuit boards. they are the little rectangle things in the picture and the video shows a ram chip and where to get them off of the ram. but they are on all computer motherboards and processors and things like that.
does that answer the initial question? because it sounds like no one else knew but me?

Stick around mntnman. Goods times are to be had. And yes, we are trying to have some more tolerance here. I for one can't believe my post earlier in this thread. It must have been one of those days.
it does answer the majority of my question, and thank you. I had been saveing the round, disk shaped things (multitude of colors and sizes), I noticed if you knocked the shell off of them with a hammer, they were what looked like metal, similar in shape and size to a watch battary, and bigger, but they weren't magnetic, and I pretty dern sure they aren't aluminum, so it got me to thinkin. It's the things that kinda look like M&M's.
Are you talking about these??? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...capacitors.jpgQuote:

Or maybe these?? http://www.niccomp.com/main/collage_r4_c1_f2.jpg
the top picture. The bottom ones are caps. if I remember correctly.
The top pic is called disc caps and the bottom is can caps.
gotcha, any sense in saving them? or am I just making a coffee can paper weight? (not that it's very heavy, they have about the same weight as aluminum)
Not that I know of, but you might try google and see what comes up. The can caps have an alum can surrounding a mess of insides but it would take a bunch of them to make any weight.Quote:

If you come across any of these http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/...p/Tantalum.jpg
They have little blocks of Tantalum inside them. I just crush the plastic coating off them with pliers.
I save the Tantalum as I might find a buyer for it one day.
why are you looking for palladium specifically.
why not ask or look for gold, copper or more generally available scrap.
btw , how much would a pound of mmc caps go for.
According to this website, they consider MLCC's as high value, no mention of any others.

Im not looking for palladium specifically, i scrap mostly copper, alum, and brass, but have been scrapping some electronics lately and have been saving the boards, time is something i have, so i was curious if it would be profitable to start saving some of the componets as opposed to selling the boards as a whole. As it is i remove the heat sinks and transformers. I find mostly low grade boards, t.v.s mostly. Was just curious if there was an "edge" i was missing. No one collects escrap in my area, so i just got the idea that it may be a worthwhile adventure, so im just starting my research on it.
If no one is doing escrap in your area then I would start. Even shipping to buyers if you can get the stuff for free or next to nothing will pay better than copper anyday in my opinion.
that is my plan, in the long run anyhow, gotta start small as I have no capital. I got 5 comp. towers and a server tower yesterday, and a pickup full of printers and copiers today.
I knew the answer but I didn't want to sound like a know-it-all by answering everybody's questions all the time, it gets on peoples nerves, you know???Quote:

I found out the answer. Someone told me today that the reason the inside of crt screen looks silver is because it has a platinum coating. Apparently, the coating is worth $250, but you can't get at it because the manufacturers mix poisonous chemicals in with the platinum to stop tv delivery lorries getting hijacked.
Why are people so thick?
Wayne, did you slap them up the side of their head?
I would have more success running round trying to catch snowflakes in a bucket.
What good is this forum if people (newbes or vets) ask questions that they can't find the answers to get treated like dumb a@#. I thought this forum was here to help fellow scrapers out. It seems to me if your not one of the good old boys your just s!@# out of luck. I have been a forum member for a few months now and what this forum realy is. Again my .02
I think he meant plutonium.
Google turns up all the info needed.
