I am thinking they are some sort of power supply, but not sure.

Are you able to get a model or part number from them?

They kind of look like A security camera system that would hold the vcr's. Just they should be standing upright. Can you get other photo's of them?

battery backups?.........If I could get better pic of control panel it would be easier to tell

I will probably know more today. They are mine now and I agree that they do look heavy. My guess is some kind of industrial equipment. Of course I am hoping they are early servers, but most likely not. I'll post up some more pics once I have a chance to get my hands on them.

And Billygoat, if you're free tomorrow (Saturday) and would be willing to help me in Irondequoit for an hour hour or two, i'd be happy to pay you with a few of these mystery boxes :)

now that youve gone & got us interested, its the least u can do....

Based on the picture it is assumed this is some kind of remodeling project (new wood on top) in a industrial building. Knowing the type of business and what type of energy powered them would also be a clue.

I'm interested in knowing what these are too. Looks to be some sort of tape backup units. looks like a neat find. Keep us updated.

Still no answer yet. I have some more pics though.
Hopefully Billy and I will figure it out tomorrow. Looks like they are from Xerox though, which makes sense, there headquarters were nearby.

Looks like expansion drives for the old 80s model Xerox computers. You may have hit a good lick with that score.

Okay, so it is not Xerox equipment. Found out a little more today. Unfortunately these things must weigh close to 200 pounds a piece. They are hard drives. Manufactured by a company called Magnetic Peripherals, Inc, that was a joint venture between Control Data Corporation and Honeywell.

The closest I can find is this listing ebay, but my units are a hell of a lot bigger

And yes, I do have the white plastics and blue front plate as shown in the auction listing.

Billygoat came out to give me a hand today. Truly a wonderful guy (thanks again Billy). We couldn't easily move these and decided my best plan might be to break them down where they sit. I mean seriously, who would want a 200 pound hard drive anyway??

And for the record, HipoGear is truly a wonderful lady.

There is a configuration label on the side indicating these were made in August 1987

I hope you sell that, that will be awesome...

These are great, thanks for the pics. Those boards are going to bring a good price, especially the ones with the gold capped chips.

Now I have a question for you all. What the heck am I supposed to do with that huge magnet (the cylinder in first picture above)?

Sell it on ebay.

Grade your SS with it.

Put it in a plastic container and use it to clean up the shop floor/work bench. The plastic container separates the steel trash from the magnet making it much easier to keep it clean.

Get your finger between it and a some steel, it can give you a great blood blister.

Good suggestions. It's really heavy and I don't see anything like it on Ebay.
I don't think my yard buys stainless. I could be wrong, I'll have to check. I've never had enough SS to bother separating it in the past.

Still looking for a purpose. Can Magnets go with shred?

Where were you four months ago? LOL ... JK. I did sell those boards to Mario. I think he did me right with them.

I have sold a lot of the processors and most of the platters on ebay. Most of the scrap has gone to the yards. I have a bit left. About a dozen CPUs, some of the back plane boards, 5 more platters and a bit of scrap metal. It really was a nice score. I probably could have done a little better eBaying everything but I'm happy with how it all turned out.
