What's yours? I'm just curious.
My favorite thing to tear down is ceiling fans.
Just simply because 99% of them something for almost every respective bucket I have.
Brass, Copper, Insulated wires, aluminum, mixed scrap.

220 wiring and (just discovered) welding cable.
Computer hard drives.
Welding equipment. It's full of copper and copper and, oh yeah, copper.
I'm going to have to say dryers, as I now feel like each one is a scratch off lottery ticket. Never know what you'll find!
My favorite things to tear down is Vehicles, Motorhomes, and Busses.
Air conditioners - they have aluminum/copper "fins", copper tubing and wiring and electric motors... sometimes aluminum covers.
transmissions, some engine heads, lawnmowers - cast aluminum
Copper wire - copper of course and now that I have my stripping machine, it's much easier on me.
aluminum cook ware - not much to do to them to clean up
Scrapped one vehicle so far but I like that. And some appliances.
I need to figure out a better way to tear down coils.

Air Conditioners.... They've got the number 2, the electric motor, the radiators. All of it makes me happy. 4 air conditioners and I can go three days and be okay fiscally. I like vacuum cleaners a lot too. In my town, most idiots just cut the cord and leave them thinking they'll strike it rich on insulated. I can get $3.00 on the motors inside them versus 50 cents for the cord. Big difference.
Computer towers. Love me some CPUs and motherboards.
Hmm. TV's/CRT monitors. I've torn down roughly 45-50 of them. Have it down to a science now. Dryers, because you never know what you'll find! Big screen TV's. Lots of wood, but LOTS of aluminum heat sinks.
Vehicles...all day long. Break it down, then stuff it to the brim. 2nd choice...large iron. I'll take on anything, but the only time I dig into the big piles of "assorted other" junk to break down, is when I lack small iron to stuff in the car bodies. I break down my non ferrous until I have enough leftovers to finish stuffing my load of cars. Depending on the size of the cars, I take in 2-4 at a time about once a week. When my non ferrous room is full, I stuff my pickup and small trailer & take it in. When my "core room is full, I do the same, but that's about a 3 day job. When my "box" (apickup box on blocks) is full of electric motors, I take it in.
P.S. Nothing wrong with putting one on it's side, or on it's top to get the cat or other goodies you may want to save, like the 9" in that sideways Ford. I also use an air chisel to split the roof so it will hold more "stuffing material"
I don't need paperwork, just a VIN, and that is somewhat optional.
I put that on its side to get the running boards, and a fair amount of brass/copper lines/valves tying the 3 fuel tanks together. Also the wire along frame rail.
Dad has a skidsteer with forks, so it was quick work.
Medium sized tractor (old Allis 7060) with forks does it for me :)
Idaho, I'm just curious, is that an air conditioned outhouse in the background???lol

lol. I can see where it might look that way. It's a shave ice stand. Known as sno ball, or sno cone in other parts of the country.

I was just making a joke, yea the sno-kone stands are a big hit around here in the summer with all the lakes close by.
Nice set-up tho,,,
The Motorsports crowd eats them up. Personally, I derby, so I know most of the derby guys within a hundred mile radius. I am in the middle of nowhere, but the nearest town north of me has a drag strip and the nearest town south of me has a circle track, so for me personally, it is really easy to unload a 9" or a GM 8.5-10 bolt with bia and a couple other gem rears. One or 2 calls to one of our area "swap shop" shows & it's gone.
I know the rat rod crowd likes them too, but I don't really run in that circle much.
my favorite is cars for sure. Even though i dont get a whole lot of them. But my favorite metal is cast iron, because its heavy, breaks up real easy and adds up real quick! my least favorite is cutting radial tires off the rim. what a pita
I like taking a part computers.
air conditioners are nice but the freon sucks
I now enjoy electric motors. Got me a system going to strip them bad boys down to get the copper out.
Other than that, I can't say there is one item I like breaking down more than the others, but if I had to say, anything electronic. VCR/CD/DVD players and computers.
Ok i know this is a no no. But i dont want to see anyone get burned or choke on freon. Condensing units def. my favorite. I reclaim the refrigerant. But if your hard core just scrapping and dont have a reclaimer and your gonna cut the lines anyway. do yourself a favor and pick up a hose or two and stick one end on the service valve and one in a bottle of water. This way if will just bubble through the water rather than gasing you or burning you. But please invest in a reclaimer.
ditto that...........
very cool idea
I like tearing motors out of dishwashers at the scrap yard. As long as I have an axe and about 10 seconds of time that the scrap yard guys have their backs to me, the motor is good as mine. Once trashman and I showed up to the scrapyard it looked like dishwasher heaven! 2o minutes later our trunk looked like motor heaven! There was a guy that tried to do it the same way I was, but it wasn't working out for him, so I knocked 1 out for him just to show off and to make him look like a wuss. left with 14 motors that day not including the 1 that went to the wuss guy.
And of course your paying for these on the way out?!?!
scrap yards rape each customer all day, every day. what goes on the steel pile was paid the steel price. What I find in the (steal) pile costs me at steel price for the weight. Then I go to another yard that pays a better price for motor scrap, who don't give a crap where it came from.
+1 on Computer towers.
Quick
Clean
Easy
...and you can churn through a big pile in no time :)
Other than that, I like the BIG VFD's and motor controlers, they have good stuff like copper bus bars, and MASSIVE ally heat sinks too!
Well the biggest I have done so far is boilers and oh boy the copper pieces are like blocks in them :D
Older Popup campers.
I will strip them to the frame, selling the aluminum and other goodies, burn the wood that is in there and I am left with a decent utility trailer to use or sell.
Microwaves, then Fridge motors (as we don't have many dehumidifiers) then TV's.
Dishwashers & then engines & washing machines. Ovens.
All in that order, I have no vehicle so I have to carry everything on my back in a sack.
It also takes into account what I find most of.
I'd have to say cars. Then air conditioners.
