Well I wanted to get some feedback on what type of a incentive, Bonus, salary, pay package that works for you with e-waste. Sales people, I believe in paying a decent wage that escalates with results. Just wanted to hear from any one that has figured out a feasible salery package in this complicated large, small, continuous or one shot wonder customers.any feed back would be appreciated.
Are you asking what it would take for an experienced Ewaste person to work for you???
The only place I know of that brought in an employee did it on the resale side, and it was commission-based.
I hated working with them!
Base plus commission is one way to go but making changes later down the road can be tough on boss and employee. I would think whom ever you put into that position would need to give input to how they get paid. Mike
Don't know as i have any good advise but:
It seems like the most fair arrangement for both of you would be to tie their pay to results. That way it would serve their self interest to grow your business.
Maybe a win/win situation ?

I know you have been in business for awhile, you know then that hiring "key" people is difficult and keeping them is even harder. It starts with a decent wage, benefits (especially paid time off), and there needs to be a compensation formula for incentive bonuses based on increased profits over a measured period of time. I would utilize a contract form for this type of employee. It wouldn't hurt to use a labor attorney for the wording of this contract, my $.02 for what it's worth. Is Florida a "At will employment" state? At will means either party can terminate the employment and why a contract may be desirable.
You have to be careful who you train. If you train the right self starter today, you may have a very knowledgeable competitor tomorrow!

A Non-Compete clause is the way to do it. In Montana, there was a company that led the way with E-Waste. Because of their excellent training, he grew 3 competitors. I'm one of them. I never was an employee, but the owner was so open that you could get him to tell you anything. They're not doing nearly as well as they used to.
Are you looking for someone to bring in materials, or send out materials (Scrap, and more than scrap)? The skillsets will be different. For incoming, I'd look into someone with an advertising background as much as anything. For sending out scrap and more than scrap value items, an IT background is much more important.
What I can say is that the commission-based employee never did too well. After a few months, he really started slacking off. When I was buying from them, it actually got to the point where they set up a table and had me test my own computers and parts. He spent all his time on online sales, so he either needed more money badly, or wanted nothing to do with me (I think it's somewhere in the middle).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a ex-employee competing as long as he/she doesn't steal information or clients while they are employed by you. Non-compete clauses are very hard to enforce, why any owner needs to be careful about all company information. This includes websites including this one.
I appreciate every one's feed back, getting back to the original post, this I just for e-waste. a sales person is just that a sales person, I don't consider a sales person a Key Person. Of course you should not share your business connections and trade information with any one that does not need it to do there there function with in the company. We treat the e-waste business as a service business,we sell responsible disposal services and responsible recycling services all wrapped up in one. I guess I will go with base, commission on every customer they bring in and have to figure out something for the residuals.
To keep them from becoming your competitor I would pay on pounds brought in not on profit from the lot.
I would keep them out of the sorting and selling part.
They will be looking for the large lots and taking in the smaller ones too. Any sales persons could do this you just need to give them the right questions to ask to get the best price. EWaste is not all that complicated they just need to be able to count parts and use a price sheet.

If I were an employee, I would value my independence in this area a lot. This is a commission/compensation that I would be interested in:
The sales person has a base pay/benefits. Also, % commission on what is purchased. On top of that, there would be leeway to negotiate prices with suppliers. So, for example say you would pay $0.20/lb for desktops. You offer 5% commission on that so the sales person gets 0.01/lb so the total out of pocket per pound is 0.21/lb for you. It would be beneficial to let the sales person try to get a lower price while splitting the savings for you. So, say he is able to get desktops for 0.10/lb. He still gets the 0.01/lb commission, but you split the difference 50/50. So, in the end, the sales person gets 0.06/lb and total out of pocket for you is 0.16/lb.
I hope that's not confusing, but it creates an incentive to both generate volume, and also get better deals.
I'm always mindful of the bottom line. When you're in business labor is one of your biggest costs.
Is the e-waste venture currently running in the black ?
If so .... what are the yearly net profits averaging after tax ?
Would the real cost of adding an employee eat up all of the profit ?
We have had great results with the sales and marketing position we developed. Its a complicated formula between our system, pay and results( which isn't measured immediately).. Its allowed us to venture out further and have had great success down in your neck of the woods 1956. A good sales program can be both a goldmine or a bad one a gold drainer.
We have a couple of websites for e-waste one goes after the company's that want some company to come into there place of business and provide the man power and equipment required to remove the equipment and recycle it responsibile. We do not pay these clients for there equipment we are providing a service for them.This is the area I want a salesperson for. The competition charges for this service.We do not. Now the buying site is totally different from the service provided site. It's a unique business plan but it works good for me. If I can buy your equipment and sell it for a profit I want your business, and if you just want your outdated unwanted equipment removed and recycled responsibly with out cost I also want your business.
