Howdy, i've been strippin out tv's recently. I'm getting pretty much all aluminum wire, no copper wire.
Since its such a dang small guage, is it even worth saving? I've been putting it all in my alum pile, but ill stop if it aint worth my time haha.

If you are talking about the insulated wiring, you could be right. HOWEVER, you still have the copper collar which is part of the "Electron Gun" , and around the frame of the tube there is a wire that some call the "degaussing wire",[about 1/4" in size usually] and it is normally copper. There is some other small "braided wire" that is also attached to the 4 corners where the tube is screwed to the plastic frame, which is "light copper". It looks like AL or Stainless, but it is copper.Quote:

In order to make any long running profits with TV/ Monitors, you will need to really get into it and find sources to take ALL your products.
If you are just doing an occasional TV, here and there, I would forget about it.
I process an avg. of 40-50 CRTs a week, and it is just now beginning to really look profitable.

Thanks buddy. Last week i processed 39 tv's. So i got a LOT of that. I'm saving it all. ALL, haha. I have a place that takes my plastic off my hands, and i can dump all my hazerdous off for free every monday at my local transfer station.
I've got a nice pile of that alum wire, still insulated, small guage. Weighed it, roughly 40 pounds. I strip all the copper windings off, and break them down. Take all those copper attachments and AL heat sinks off too.

Last night I checked out a dumpster and there was a TV right there on top of all trashbags so I just took the hatchet to it right there.
All the mess sprayed around the dumpster and all the copper/alum in my truck :)
When taking the electron gun off, i accidentally broke the entire glass tube into pieces and to my surprise there is a baking sheet-thich steel piece inside the back of the tube, light steel mesh on the front (viewer) side, and 4 small copper tabs, one at each corner, of that baking sheet CRT liner.
The degaussing cable is really easy to strip and most definitely worth it. The rest, except power cord---nah.
On the circuit board are a few inductors , including oftentimes one completely covered by plastic resin, you cant tell its an inductor until it starts coming apart.
Every bit of wire that I don't strip goes in to my misc. wire bin. Copper or Aluminum,the yard will give about .60/lb for it.
the easiest way I have found to strip degassing wire is to lightly run the grinder around one side, works like a charm takes 30 secounds.
Hoss, we did almost 20 tv's/monitors and the only aluminum wire we got might be one handful,where are you getting all this "aluminum" wire from? You might have silver colored copper also, they do that to confuse the H*** out of you.
so the silver wire(with all the springs attached) that runs run the front of the tube is copper? ive only just started saving them after leaving about 50 in there:(. how very dare these tv companies confuse us! pink, red, green and now silver coloured copper:p
another thing is when some of the heatsinks are steel, that sucks
I'm with Hurrikane. I throw everything but the degaussing wire in a bucket and call it good. The yard never digs through my buckets and didnt even do a magnet test the last time I went. I've even stopped checking wire if it's below a certain size.
i have been doing the same with all the small stuff, it all adds up,
as im new to scrapping ive been taking little samples of wire to the yard
and they just tell me if its got metal in it we take it!
which spurs me on to collect more and more!
yes it is worth saving well it is to me at least. im doin that right now probably got about 65lbs of it saved up now.
I don't think I've ever gotten aluminum wire out of tv's before si I'm confused as to what kind of tv's you are stripping? Maybe a certain kind have aluminum and not copper??

Strange, but when I look at the pic posted by Mechanic688 ^^up there^^ I don't see wire or colors. I just see $$$!
I did a 32" Panasonic with 2 of those thick aluminum cables, but there were also a copper cable that was about 1 1/2 lbs
Yeah, I thought he was talking about coated wire. My bad. With regards to the degaussing cable, I've never run across one that was aluminum.Quote:

That braided copper wire is Nickel coated copper wire braid.
Its useful as a 'solder sucker' if you put flux on it & then use it to suck up molten solder on a circuit board.
It'll suck solder up about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Once its done that, just snip that bit off & keep using it.
Thats a old electricians trick.
I have found a few TVs with Ali degaussing cable, not for a while though.

Most I've done are copper but I've encountered a few that were copper plated aluminum. If you hit it with a file or cut it in half the inside is solid white aluminum.Quote:

Same thing. But too be more accurate, YES it is nickel coated. Some yards call it "white copper", "tinned copper". Those are nick names. It's all, "Nickel coated copper".Quote:

Whats more, I cut a whole bunch of nice thick 'Copper wire' from the back of a kitchen stove a while ago, it had soft insulation & a nice soft 'rubbery spring' to it.
I was thinking it was copper wire, of a fine strand, 'nickle coated' ("haha" now if you want...).
It turned out to be Nonmagnetic Stainless Steel wire..........
Hell, I even convinced the scrapmetal dealer....
I do remember him saying something about the "Coated copper wire is supposed to go in with the Bronze".
Makes sense now.
Since then I have figured out that if you cut the wire at a steep as angle as possible, it makes the cross section a lot larger & a lot easyer to see if its Copper..
The older I get, the more I know I don't know.
