Today at one of the yards I use before I was even out of the truck one of the guys was at my window on a tow motor saying '' You know we're hiring right? when can you start? Monday?''
He tossed an application on my dash and said ''you know your metals, you know all the guys, fill it out and I'll talk to the boss!''

Thanks everyone! I'm definitely going to fill it out and turn it in tomorrow when I drop off a load of scrap! But it just shocked the hell outta me for sure!!!! I'm pretty excited!!

Thanks Monty! And yes, if the big boss (who I'm familiar with) says ''ok'' then I'm going to do it! I can work scrap by day and learn more and scrap on my own at night as well.
You do realize this group will expect a report from you (once every 2 weeks or so) about the other side of the fence (scrapyard worker) with tips and suggestions on how <we> can make more money? :D

Congratulations seem to be in order. Lady or not skill is skill. Apparently the level of expertise you have shown has impressed those around you. Congratulations, I've never got an offer from my yard (even tho they go thru employees like I do sox) I did get a compliment from 2 of the scale men thanking me for the good sorting job. They commented that it helped make their job just a little easier. Some people just bring everything in in one big load then stand there waiting for the scale guys to sort it for them. They should dock them a few cents for handling the peoples scrap twice.

The main yard I use has two girls working there.
Congrats NA!! I've been thinking about trying to get a job at one of the yards around here for the summers but I don't know if they'd hire me. LOL I know my stuff better then the main scale guy sometimes and they go through employees like crazy! They always hire guys who have never been in a scrap yard in their life and teach them everything. The last one didn't know how to grade aluminum the first time I saw him. Not everyone can survive in a scrap yard if you don't learn to love the metal.

Instead of scrapping at night see if you can just buy scrap you know how to make more money on.
The thing I would ask for is to look though the #2 Cu for silver contacts. lots go in as#2 and they never get sorted.

SDAve, I might not have taken the job if that was a condition, I've been going there for over 5 years and that was the first thing I asked about!! Lol, priorities lol.
I know some of the workers around here sell to other yards that I go to, it is kinda funny to see them as a customer at another yard. Most yards are afraid of theft of their own material and then having to buy it back again.
As you learn while working there, if there is anything that can you share with us, that will help us do a better job, we will be all ears. Congratulations!
