As the metallic maniac I'm a mad scrapper although I hate the word scrap. I'm rethinking my position since I posted up for real. OMG you say! Lol yes. 1scrap :)
I don't scrap, I recycle.
I don't recycle I scrap. Unless youre going to pay me to do it you will have a hard time getting me to do anything with non-metal recyclables besides pitch them in the dumpster.
I used to scrap out of necessity. I only made 7 bucks an hour and had a lot of bills and people to take care of. Now i make a lot more but i still scrap when money is tight(been laid off for two weeks) or when im bored. Im in it for the money and for cruising around with my daughters and wife eating cheetos and laughin it up. I much prefer it to hanging out with sweaty dudes and sledgehammers in the middle of the desert but the sweaty guys pay better lol

One more attempt on my part to try to understand what are you asking? "I walk no thin line why do you ?" Are you asking if I venture out into other types of scrap or is it a reference to "borderline illegal"?

Lawn furniture, patio table, swing, grill, new set of dishes, coffee table, leaf blower, coffee table, sewing machine, carpet cleaner, new curtains, arbor for the garden....etc, etc

People do without because they either can't open there eyes, or out of pride.
Scrapping just came from picking things up that looked better sitting at the curb then they did close up.
Running out of wants now, so I do more scrapping, some re-selling, and some giving.
Some one will be picking up a nice baby rocker/glider that I picked awhile back, cleaned, fixed the cushions last month and just put it on freecycle.
I already had a fulltime job that, by definition, has me driving around all day in areas where the residents have more dollars than sense.
I was pondering getting a part-time gig to help fund some things we wanted to have/do/etc.
One day I saw a simple, orange extension cord sitting atop someone's trash bin. I likely wouldn't have given it a second thought, but just that morning I'd read an article about how copper was almost $4/pound and folks were predicting it to go to $10 ( :& ) . So I stopped & grabbed it. I took it home & spent almost an hour stripping it with a utility knife & pulling the copper out by hand & really wasn't too thrilled with the effort & time involved... but I really liked the heft of that ball of copper at the end. I also knew I could find easier ways to get at that copper if this new idea that was forming in my head worked out. I started looking around at the trashpiles in the areas I drove through & realized there were other metals that were worth money. That aluminum shower door... that diecast lamp... those rusted steel flowerbed borders. I started picking all those things up, and realized I could make just about as much as I would've working part-time for someone else, but I could do it out of my garage where I don't have to answer to anyone... well, anyone except my wife! ;)
Then, one day I was puttering around the net & I figured there might be a place I could go & learn a little more about other folks that picked up metals... get some of their ideas & put them to use. Lo & behold, I fould this website called scrapmetalforum.com & would you believe... there's a PhD in scrapping residing in the threads on that site. But yall already knew that.
Best part was, I learned on that site about this stuff called ewaste... peoples' old computers are actually worth a WHOLE LOT of money.
I'll still pick up extension cords, though!

Now, when looking back at how I was then. You could say, 'this kid is going to be a hoarder for sure!' Well kinda. I think that way of thinking translated perfectly as a scrapper. I like to keep my area organized, and all my "collections" in their own buckets. My motivation for going out and getting more scrap, is building my brass, copper, aluminum, etc. "collection." I like admiring my collections too, but am never afraid to turn it in for cash when the time comes. The only difference between me as a scrapper and me as a hoarder, Is I'm never afraid to clean house and start a new collection.

I contribute to the betterment of the environment by taking that what is deemed useless and making it once again valuable. As such, "Your trash, my cash." As for time, it's only desperate as a result of poor choice of living above your affordable means. Like the other fellow recycler, my official position is a Recycled Material Specialist where scrapping down a device is a byproduct of conservation. Did you get all that?Quote:

im just a dude with a truck and 2 trailers and too many tools... loll i have a few regulars who treat me VERY well not enough to go full time yet but enough that i can get by, keep my bills paid etc. these regulars who i have developed a relationship with through other people who made the introduction are my bread and butter really. that and my bmw's there is never a shortage of people looking to find cheaper parts for those cars. when i get to busy to answer replies to my ads i stop advertising until work slows down again. anyone elese run into this delema?Quote:

Me personally, I do it for two main reasons, to keep me busy and to help reclaim resources. I get bored very easy just sitting around, so it keeps me from polishing the couch with my butt. I am by no means a environmentalist whacko, but I do believe in saving resources (keep out of the landfill) if possible. That is why if I see a small washer or screw while I am walking along, I will pick it up. It is not worth much so it will not affect my bottom line, but I pick it up so I can help reclaim that resource instead of it getting buried in a landfill somewhere forever. And eventually those small pieces will add up in helping to save resources. The planet has a finite amount of resources, and helping to save every little bit helps.
