Scrapping my 89 Ford 4x4

As you may remember, I'm not into stripping a vehicle but the chat in another thread leads me to wonder if I shouldn't do some basic removal on this vehicle. I've used this truck around the farm for 10 years but it now has a valve out, uses oil, no power, the tranny is hard to get into reverse (sign of oldage in a 5 spd manual) and I don't need it. It's a 460 V8. Would cost too much to fix. As an old friend, I hate to see it crushed so might be able to get myself convinced to at least remove the transfer case. I'll keep the tires/wheels as they'll fit on trailers and pickups. Here's the pic.....

Yep.. at least get the cherries: Converter, Battery, Starter, Alternator and A/C Pump.

I take it into a core buyer. They will send it in, refurb it and put it back out on the market.

P.S. You can probably pull that rear 3/4 ton axle and sell it on Craigslist for a much better swing than it going in at .10 or .11 an lb as scrap!

If you were closer, i'd be making you an offer on it. It's a twin to my '90 F250 when i bought it, except mine has the 7.3 and the heavier front axle. The body looks to be in great shape compared to what mine was. Always a shame to see an old friend (truck) go.

Maybe I'll advertise it and see what happens. I'm not in a populated area here so delivery/pickup is always a concern. As for core buyers, that's new to me ....never met one but I'll ask around. Thanks

Yeah I know; I'm out here at the end of the earth. Had to fight traffic into the scrapyard last week. Must have met 3 or 4 vehicles and one was a big scary semi truck. Then to top it all off, another 4 passed me and all of that in 50 some miles. It's tough !! LOL

Actually, I'd like to sell it complete but maybe I'll muster up enough get-up-and-go to take it apart when it warms up.

There aren't many of those body style (87-91) fords running around anymore, at least around here, might be able to make a good buck parting it out, if you have the room and the time.

if it's any consolation to scrapping your old friend, you might check some of tater's old posts about making a trailer out of the bed ; )

Around my area, a truck like that one would get snatched up quickly, either for parts or more likely to fix. There are a lot of good-running Fords of that body style with rusted-out bodies and undercarriages. Yours looks pretty solid, and would be a great project truck for someone to swap in a good engine and tranny out of their rustbucket and bring it back to life.

I've scrapped some 90s F-series trucks that really were junk, and quickly sold every half-decent part that was on them. Good beds, tailgates and doors leave fast. If nobody bites on the whole truck, I would definitely do a part-out. One that I junked was an XLT with a nice gray plush bench seat just like yours... That seat brought $225 from a guy who was fixing up an old Bronco, and he came 200 miles from another state to pick it up! I wish I had a half-dozen of those seats, as I got numerous calls for that one after it was gone.

Looks like you're located pretty close to me Sparrow. I've tried parting out those and slightly newer ford trucks and barely had a nibble on any parts except for myself and my friends. Tried Craigslist, Facebook groups, everywhere. Beds are by far the hardest thing to get in decent shape. I've heard of them selling upwards of 1k if they're in good shape. Tried finding one for my truck but ended up with a utility bed for 1/2 the cost of a good used factory bed. If you get any 87-91 F250 or 350's in be sure to contact me, i'm always looking for spare parts.

I part out cars on a daily basis and from my experiance with this age vehicle the demand for parts are pretty low. most of the time on a newer vehicle I would be taking things like the a/c control, window and door lock switches (power), tail lights, sun visors, radios and things like that and pop them on ebay. but older vehicles like this dont have much demand.....SO the best thing to do is just turn and burn and dont wast to much time or effort unless you want to. to maximize your scrap profit.. remove the wheels and dismount the tires and sell the wheels as clean (no wheel weights or valve stem) keep the rims and tires if you need them they will save you money down the road.. your right they make great trailer tires...remove the a/c compressor, alternator, starter, battery and radiator. These are quick and easy and bring good money.. if you dont have a core buyer in your area just scrap them still better than scrap.. also most intake manifolds are aluminum and could be taken off in minutes with simple hand tools... and of course we all know the catalytic converter is your most important thing to take off of a vehicle before you scrap it...

now if you are technical and can pull the wiring harness then have at it. youll make out good with the wire.. just remove the plastic loom and most clip the ends and you have #1 wire. some buyers also love o2 sensors as well but you need a lot of them to make it worth it.

Rustngrease, We're about an hour and a half apart. That's pretty close. I'll definitely let you know if I get any of those trucks, you can come down and get first pickings :)

I always do well parting out F-series trucks. Those and the older Jeep Cherokees are all over the place here, and their owners love them. More than once, I've heard things like "I like the old body style" and "They don't make these anymore and I don't like the newer ones". Manual transmissions are also very well-liked around here, and they're getting too hard to find in newer trucks. I know a few guys who have kept their older trucks for that reason alone.

I've had my share of unwanted orphan junkers that got literally zero bites for any parts, including some that I thought would be more popular. Among the recent duds were a 1996 Olds 88 and a 1998 Buick Skylark. My most recent good one was a 2002 Pontiac Montana van, the parts buyers stripped that thing to a skeleton!

I think the popularity of certain vehicles can vary greatly depending on where you are, and with it, the demand for used parts varies.

Sounds great Sparrow. There's about a million jeep cherokee's around here too, seems as if everyone and their brother has or had one at one time. I've already driven across pa and new jersey to save a couple willys jeeps (for my restoration project) plus driven up to mid new york for a parts truck so an hour and a half for one or parts wouldn't be bad at all. Actually the bed i have on my '90 now came from carlisle,pa. I've been out towards central pa quite alot in the past year.

If somebody out that way needs a part you dont have for the older F-series, Let me know, I have a stock of parts and so do most of the local u-pull's.

The first vehicle I bought new was a 89 f150 red long bed , 302 4 speed with low. You will be OK let the old girl go.

that truck is worth more parted out or sold whole than scrap.

460 can be sold for more than scrap

that body looks fairly nice, sold more than scrap

that trans and transfer case is likely able to be sold more than scrap.

that model was only around for a few years? original body panels are worth more than scrap.

I'd offer you $100 over scrap price if you were closer.

Like I told another member, if you'll just get on Google Earth and put your cursor on Michigan and drag it to Iowa, then you'll be closer to Nebraska and I can sell you the truck ~~!!!
