can you believe.

so I hear a bunch of fellow scrappers and long timers talk about Christmas lights.. so I spot a bunch of boxes full this morning, snatched them up.. while on the phone with my local scrap yard asking a different question I stated that from what ive heard across the nation, Christmas lights normally go as number 2 insulated... my yard said they don't take x mas lights.. I explained that's just wire, all lights are clipped... he said nope.. you may toss in with tin but not even low recovery.. now I striped a small piece and theres more copper in x mas wire than some tv wire they take... I tell you this state is backwards in most cases..:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Clip off the lights and throw in with #2. Bet they take it just fine.

My local yard in ky does not take x mas lights. I just snip off the lights and throw it in my heavy #2, about 90 cents a lb. If u don't tell them they are x mas lights and u un twist them, and mix it in with other unclean #2" they shouldn't know. Don't know why they wouldn't buy it.

I try and not turn in them this time a year, Turn them in in a few months ago and no questions... This time The guy tells me that they are christmas light wire so they go in with that (for .15 lb). I say I cut off alll bulbs so that they can go in with the #2 ins wire ($1 lb) he says ok but next time leave the bulbs on for christmas wire price... I don't think the bulbs will make up the .85 difference...

Just for the record I would not recomend anyone burn off copper. Its very harmful to ozone, and illeagl.

Illegal in most states

Again I just saw that I forgot that parrt. Sorry. I had a little trouble trying to edit it as I am on a phone and not a computer. I didn't intend to tell anyone to burn wire. That would be the same as telling someone to burn the old tires off wheels. I'm glad u all catching my mistakes. Gonna lay off the keyboard for now cause I am feeling like a dumb a double s. AGAIN ANYONE READING THIS. I'M NOT ADVISING ANYONE TO BURN COPPER WIRE. ITS VERY ILLEAGL.

yess I think ill save them for mid year but wire that small/thin they call it low recovery where im at. I even had mixed appliance wire, power cords and kept the small stuff separated but unless you have some thick wire at this yard its low recovery so.. im buying a stripper from tnt tooling (from Canada) unless I find one of exact nature.. cost 64 plus 9 to ship.

My yard takes christmas lights w/ bulbs as copper bearing along with low grade circuit boards and motors. Maybe your yard would take them as that

Not here in Louisiana. I haven't found a scrap yard yet around here that takes circuit boards. We are definitely backwards. No christmas lights either (I'm in livingston not too far from New Iberia). What I do is strip them.

There's a lady in Denham Springs that takes em. She's on Hwy. 190. She's got an inspection station in the front and a small recycling center in the back. About 6 months back she was paying .20 per pound for Christmas lights. Not sure what she's paying now. I think she turns em in to Southern Scrap, but I'm not 100% sure on that. And I don't think she takes circuit boards either. Btw, Livingston to New Iberia is almost 100 miles. Kinda far, ain't it? ;)

I didn't know about her, sorry. 100 miles is far, I meant more that it isn't 3 or 4 states over or more. And that it isn't far for there to be different policies, though I have seen yards 20 miles apart that have different policies. I mean't no offense by anything, and I hope no one took it that way. I was just trying to add what I have experienced lately.

No offense here, cajun. I myself hope I did not offend. Certainly not my intention. My apologies if I did. I, like you, was simply trying to pass along a little knowledge of the local scene. And you're right, I too have seen the difference in policies between yards. Most probably the same yards you're speaking of. It can be mind boggling. Keep on scrappin!! :)

Somewhere in there I thought about suggesting Beaumont but then nahh, that would be way too far. Been awhile since I was through there much but think it can't be much further

No problem my friend. After reading my original post, I realized I sounded a little ***holish. And im not good at explaining things...why im not a teacher..lol

ill have to check a yard that's about 45 min from me but the 2 close ones no.. they sell to the bigger yards lol... they don't even take small motors like printer motors or cdrom motors or flyback transformers.. o well I live in a backwards state...

Nice to meet you too. It is definately a backwards state, but it is the only state I ever want to call home.
