I have looked but honestly they all look the same to me
The tattletale mark I mentioned is a good indicator cause a lot of caps do not have it.
The other day I saw posts from eric where he had pics. Now for the life of me I can not find them. Can someone help
Thank u mechanic. I read that whole thread the other day and reread it. Decided that it was gonna be more of a headach than its worth. But I decided to read through it again and look at erics pics again and give it another try. Prob gonna get my head hurting again
Glad I'm not the only one that is STILL having trouble identifying these. Actually seeing them on the board in the picture above is actually a great help because it puts it into scale. I know that it would be a lot of work for someone who knows what they are doing, but a series of pics of the tantalum caps on the boards would help some of us spot them in the wild.
Their kind of like a snipe, once you have caught your first one then you never forget what they look like.
I don't know what pics ur talking about. I wished I could see them. Maybe it would help me out some. Still having trouble. Maybe I'm over thinking it, but I first check to see it the number starts with a c then ####. Then I check to see if there is a + or a line to mark the positive, then check to see if at least one lead is magnetic and I think I might have some, but don't know. Sent etack a pic to see. There is so many different things on the boards that look rright but not. My head is spinning and I am out of wiskey. Merry X mas everyone
Just wondering if only ta caps are magnatic. Or if other ones are too. I have pulled a few caps off. They are similar in size and shape, just different colors. Some have 1 mag lead some both and some none.
Did u get the pics I sent u yesterday. Thanks man. Dennis
Got my head hurting soo bad. Had to break open the wifes homemade pineapple wine!!!!!
I found a few on some of my boards today and weighed one, the ones that I have weigh 0.10 grams so by my calculation it will take around 4,500 to make a pound. Not sure if these are worth saving. Has anyone sold some and got a count on how many it takes to make a pound?

Those round yellow caps are not tanti's. The polarity would be marked on the board too. The Tantis that look similar to this look just like a dollop of paint, you can't really see whats underneith from outside it.
The (+) sign on the capactor is the 'telltale' to Tantis.
I found some info a few days ago that gives me the impression that some of the Tanti caps that are in Ali cans, are 'wet' capactors.
The brown rectangles in front of the big blue capactor are SMD Tantis. I'm not sure if the lighter brown ones are, I think they are, just not 100% sure.
The little black SMD's that are the same size, are resistors.
Omg lol, after reading this thread and the linked ones, I went and looked at all my boards in the garage to see if this was something I'd want to add to my scrapping. I was so confused by what I was reading and looking at and then I saw how small some of these things are I decided I'd go cross eyed trying to make this work and I'd see if you would just BUY the boards from me for 20.00 lb lol. Obviously not and I'm just kidding but my serious question for you is, what do you do with the Tantalum you recover? Do you use it in your job or is that something that gets sold to a buyer like say, gold or silver would be?
I'd never heard of this stuff before joining this forum so am curious now lol.
Eric. I hope that u find someone to help u collect the ta caps. I have read and read and then drink and read some more and I don't think I am gonna mess with it. That is hard for me to say cause I am open to about any thing that make me money, and consider myself a pretty quick learner but OMG. Thanks for all the help and I will continue to re-read these posts and any new one on here and maybe some day will venture into it again. Good luck on ur hunt.
And good luck for everyone who is SNIPE hunting for etack
Hey tack, great thread and I'm learning a lot. So is it better for you if we separate the different styles or do you care. Was going to start a jar for the surface mounts and one for through the board but if it doesn't matter to you then I'll probably save the bench space and put them all in one.
Also I'll be incinerating chips and monolithic ceramic caps for refining. Can the tanti caps be tossed in with those and the pellets recovered, should they be burned separately, or is it even worth the effort to do this?
I do like the can style seperate from the epoxy style.

Buying Tantalum Capacitors
Eric
Im surprised to see the attention paid to this. How much are these things worth?
they are worth $15-20 a pound depending on the amount you are selling. I just bought 900 pounds of caps and 100# of anodes for $26000.00. so scale is everything.
I don't see why some people pick up Al cans.
Some Ta caps are worth $0.20 each some are worth over $1.00 each. Most are worth about $0.01 each.
If you are already stripping boards then its worth your time if not it won't be.
Eric
I would like to see some pics of ta caps on a board. I have yet to find any, and have read so many times all the info on ur other thread as well as tthis one. I have sent u pics and not what u want. Etack what kind of board contains the most Tantalum caps in your experience?
it took me 8 hours cleaning boards to recover about 2 pounds so thats about $5 hour. So not worth it to me, but to each there own.
server, medical, industrial, and military.
I am working on a blog post of examples with boards and the caps I.D.
I will work faster on it.
If anyone wants to contribute board pics to me I will greatly appreciate it. I am looking for any in the classes I listed above.
Eric
Etack knows his stuff. ITs mlcc. Just read a whole thing on them. Mlccs use 5 percent of total pl use every year. Looks like even more so before 1992. Newer mlcc are made with nickel. Thats all new to me.
Once again thanks to forum and its members.

I promise I'm trying my hardest to figure this out. I have quite a bit of OLD telecom and test equipment boards right now and I know they have these caps. I think I have correctly identified the little "paint drop" looking ones
they look like the reds ones on the right of this BOARD 1, BUT am I right there are no OTHERS on this board and the green discs are NOT tantalum??

My challenge is identifying any of the OTHER types of tantalum caps. Please let me know if you see any OTHER types in these pics. THANKS!!!

Send theses pics to my email and I will paint them up for you. Looks like you have some caps worth the lime to pull.

I do see a whole bunch of the gold legged transistors in the first set of pic's. (Bear posted something about them and what's hidden inside)
Yes, I have hundreds of these little suckers all over these boards. They are a pain in the butt to remove them and super time consuming. I'm trying to find out their value before I spend days pulling them all off. There are actually some gold legged square transistors as well as lots of gold legged eproms and pins.
You get tired of removing all those gold things, just let me know an I'll send you my address Red. ;)
Sirscrapalot - Likes gold. Lots an lots.
