Today i found a really old car battery in the woods behind my house. It's bleached by the sun and the plastic is brittle. The sides have already chipped away from the elements and i can see inside it. Do you guys know if the scrap yard will take it in such bad shape? Is there any way to get the lead out since its not oozing acid or anything(not sure if they really do that or not) or should i just toss it.

get your gloves on and put it in a box, then take it to the yard and sell it ; )
around here i can sell batteries in any condition.ive sold them that have been burnt in fires my core buyer just geuses them at either 3/4 or 1/2 a battery and pays me accordingly.in my area batteries are sold by the piece not by the pound .i hear alot of folks on here saying they sell them by the pound and if that was the case im sure they will just weigh it.assuming there is still lead in it
what gets me is wondering how much you lose because it's not still full of acid(which they no doubt have to deal with someway) ; )
Getting .29 # last time sold batteries, screw that so much per battery.
they only recover the lead in the battery, so condition is not an issue....
how much does an average battery weigh ? it seems like i would loose selling them by the pound . i get 12 dollars for any auto mobile battery and 20 to 40 for the semi truck/large machinery batteries.it seems like id loose selling by the pound.especially on the small auto batteries.ive been meaning to weigh a few batteries since ive joined this site and saw folks were selling them by the pound.id actually never heard of selling them by the pound till i found this forum.i know the battery remanufacturing place i deal with sells there unfixable ones by the weight.but i figured id need a semi load to sell them that way..its funny how stuff is different depending on what region you live in..now that i think about it the farthest ive ever sold scrap from my house is about 1 hour and 15 minutes away so for all i know columbus may buy them by the pound
My yard buys batterys by weight. They will also take anything that was a car/etc battery. They would take the mashed up battery & put it in the middle of the pallet load of batterys so its held together in place.
They will also take the lead/acid/gell batterys & put them in there too.
Theres no geat loss of $ by not having the acid still in it, mostly its less than a Kg anyway.
I got 'asked' if I had topped up the battery with water once (to get the extra $$). At that point I went "****, I'd intended to save the acid for home electroplating".
He didn't get what I ment by that & later on relised why it was so heavy. It was because it was a marine/4WD battery.
Marine & 4WD batterys are a LOT heavyer than standard car batterys because of the hammering they get. The plates are a LOT thicker & have more Cadinium etc.
Because of this, they don't last as long either, yah'd lucky to get 2 years outta one.
Actually, 4WD's & Boats would be a good place to find these batterys, boat owners probably couldn't be bothered to scrap & sell the old batterys more than other people would be.

really??? I would have asked them why since they ONLY scrap the lead and NOTHING else out of it....the yard guy would have to give me a good answer and he doens't know anything apparently...granted I won't argue over a couple of bucks if a good yard, but that is just showing ignorance or trying to get one over on you.

The reason cracked/broken batteries are worth less is that they require special handling. If acid is leaking, the battery is placed in a leakproof container (ie bucket). Obviously, it can not be then stacked on a pallet.
Also, when batteries are recycled, every part of the battery is re-used. The casing is shredded to manufacture new battery cases.
Mick, every yard i've been at, they use the EPA approved (laugh) plastic sealing bags, that easily stack on a pallet. Not calling you out or anything, because lord knows things aren't the same at every yard. Just saying, that here, a "broken" battery wouldn't constitute a lower price.
took in three today that had been smashed by an I beam. one was missing the case on two sides. No problems at all. put them on the scale with the non broken ones and weighed it all together.

Keep in mind that yards and yard guys play by different rules depending on who they are. If you see that a yard guy acts a little shady or is not on the up and up with you . You don't have to sell to him I have seen times when one scrapper gets one price and the next guy get more or less depending on who they are. I have even seen yards put the screws to guys over a couple shovels full of dirt and knock off 3 or 400 pounds just because they saw a little dirt in a lite iron load. Get to know your yard guys and the ones you can trust. Make sure you talk with other scrappers and get quotes. Because some yards will jerk you off.
