UPDATE - Uploading Pictures to the Forum

As of today, uploading images to the forum as attachments is allowed.

Once your account has a few posts and some time on the forum, this option will become available to you. Newly registered members must still use an external photo sharing site to share images.

To upload pictures to posts and threads as attachments, underneath the post editor when writing a post is an area for 'additional options'. Here you can use the 'manage attachments' button to upload and include images in your post.

If anybody has any issues using image attachments, please let us know.

Exceeds your quota by 13.3 KB. Message received when trying to upload 14kb jpg, looks like this feature is limited.

You need to set the max file size a little high. I had to do this with my forum before the software would allow anything to ever get posted.

I like that you have added this capability to the forum, but I have a couple suggestions.

1. The only file type allowed for a larger size is for jpg. Some people use other formats such as png.
2. This will take a little programming, but you can add an image handler that will resize and compress images that are uploaded. There are php modules that do this. That or, Mechanic688 will have to get to work creating all new tutorials for editing images :)

PNG files are more for photo editing programs such as Photoshop. I dont know what all file types admin is allowing, but I know vbulletin will accept multiple file types.

It could be that the user was uploading a JPG file, so the admin only increased that one. Not sure of course, but that is my guess.

it still works the same, for particular websites simply use that websites recommended photo sizes

So is everything alright now with the image size limit?

I tried to upload images, and there are still restrictions. I'm pretty sure I won't be having any images less than 500 bytes :)

Photobucket seems to be easier still.

i think 97.7kb for jpg is still way to low, even when i turn my camera all the way down to its lowest setting of 3.1mp that is still way to small

I agree, but if this can be used effectively, it will archive all of the pictures posted forever. That way when searching old posts, the pictures will still be there.

Instead of turning it down, loosing a lot of photo quality, use an editing program(your camera likely has one on/with it, and simply "resize" it

that basically limits the picture to 500x500 pixels so all the quality is gone

how do you figure?
simple image @ 1.3MB size 2832x2128 resolution 230 pixels

imgbox - fast, simple image host

same image @ 75KB after resizing in photoshop. size 720x541 resolution 72 pixels
Skill level-minimal, image quality- medium, time taken-less than ten seconds

that is acceptable for most items, but theres not enough detail there for fine details, small or detailed items, there is an obvious difference in quality/detail between those pictures

i know there limited amount of space on the server to handle the photos but it would be sweet if we had the ability to upload 1920x1080 which is pretty much the current standard resolution, maybe you could set it up that way as an additional service and basic members would still be limited to 100k uploads, or the paid service could be setup like cloud where you buy a set amount of storage space at a fixed price

basically it would still show a 500x500 pixel picture in the post but when people mouse over it it would take the picture to full resolution

just throwing some ideas out there, ive seen this done in other forums and it works really well

you're right JG, it does diminish the quality somewhat, here's the original, at 1.3MB 230 ppi imgbox - fast, simple image host
, and here's the same photo resized to 96ppi & at 135KB http://i.imgbox.com/actel50P.jpg , still ten times less space, in ten seconds time(with a bit less quality, but nowhere near ten times) and still every bit as viewable. If you wish to macro your items on Ebay, that's perfectly understandable, although I cannot count the listings there I've closed while they were attempting to load their dozen bloated photos ; ) This, thankfully, isn't Ebay

the system wont even let me upload a 8kb jpg so this is all pointless anyways, the feature does not work

trying to upload an 8kb jpg i get this message:

Exceeds your quota by 5.9 KB

it is 300 pixels by 155 pixels so it is within the current guidelines

it also says my upload limit is 500 bytes?

There has to be an issue behind the scenes, as I know that this does work.

That's why I still use Photobucket.

i agree with everything thats been said here, but the issue is that the feature does not work, id upload alot more pictures and do alot more informative posts if it did, i will not mess with a 3rd party for pictures, if you guys want good content for the forum you need to get this feature working

you want really good posts then we need the ability to make really good posts, how can we be top contributors when we cant contribute, my 2 cents


i think the problem is the upload limit is 500 bytes and he meant to put it as 500 kb, just a simple error is what is causing it, theres alot of difference between 500 bytes and 500,000 bytes

I guess ill post here to, I can only imagine how much it costs already to run this forum, I would guess that pictures that size would increase their server needs dramatically. I to wish it would work especially on my home page albums section I tried a few times with no luck. that being said admin has to make decisions that make sense to them. I can tell they are trying to make improvements all the time

Yup, allowing attachments increases server usage. That's life, lol.

Anyway I dug deeper into the limitation and adjusted it again. I'm about 90% positive you guys should be able to upload attachments to your posts now.

I made an adjustment in the wrong place before my previous post, I'm not trying to limit you guys to tiny thumbnails you need photoshop to create :) Should be good to go now, but as usual if there are still issues let me know and I'll keep diggin.

I think there is another issue, as I dont have an option to upload pictures directly from the computer.

I don't seem to have a problem, however I do notice that with the app, images load a bit slow you have to wait a few seconds before they are fully loaded. Unless there's another issue but that's an issue for a support ticket or a separate thread all together.

You can do that too.

I inserted the image below (which is essentially the attachment, embedded), using the button highlighted in the image. In the 'advanced' editor you will see that button.

Click the button, choose the attachment and it will be inserted into your post wherever your cursor is.

Thanks its working great now. Now the only issue is getting more space because i am going to be uploading alot of pictures.

If you have more than one attachment they will appear as thumbnails, so you'll have plenty of room. It's showing full size because there's only one attachment. If that's what you meant anyway.
