What would you pay for 3 tons of screws?

Got a call from a business that has at LEAST three tons of "miscut" screws, meaning the slot was not cut deep enough and a screwdriver slips out of them. I am NOT talking about buying them for resale but for scrap.

I made him an offer of 50% of the take, and am wondering if I overbid.

At the $190 a ton I am getting for shred, looks to be about $570 total at the yard, so I'll be paying him half of that, or $285.00. Plus he will probably have more later.

Also, since this is a pure material, I wonder if I may get a better rate for it? Of course I will ask at my yard when I take it in.

I would ask the yard before you get there with it, they may not be to happy with you if you drop 3 tons of screws on the ground.
The yard I used before I moved would have you put smaller things in a fridge or oven that they had set up for smaller stuff. That is a lot of fridges and ovens. lol
Make sure they are ready for it.

If they are deck screws or wood screws they are probably worth more than scrap to a contractor. You can always grind down the tip of a phillips bit and still use them. Might have to pre drill holes for them so the screw would go in with less torque being applied to it.

Are these loaded in gaylords that they will fork onto your truck or are we talking 3 tons lose screws?

I agree with John on the transportation could make all the difference. You might get a roll off dropped at the location by your yard and forgo much of the hassel. Mike.

If this business doesn't know how to get rid of this stuff I'm not so sure I'd want to "teach" them they could call a yard and get a roll off cutting you out. I'd be looking for another way.

The yards near here also have a charge for a roll off. If it's not free you certainly didn't leave a lot of room for profit.

It would be interesting if some of the screws are stainless.

probably 4 or 5 - 45 gallon drums with tops cut off.

I know at my yard they would unload the gaylords/barrels with their forklift and store them inside their warehouse after weighing. The loose screws would not go into the yard. They would wait in the warehouse until the next truck was loaded.

Why? I would think a yard would be happy to have a densely-packed load of fairly clean metal.

I doubt that very very much!!! Metal is metal.

I think you bid fine on this, just let him know the % may be different on other jobs you do for him depending on what he has of course.

They are in individual 40 pound boxes.

They are not that type of screw. I seriously doubt they are worth reworking.

In boxes and palletized, so forklift loading by them and forklift unloading at my yard.

5 pallets of sealed boxes.

LOL if all you have to do is drive them to the yard and get paid 50/50 is more than fair.

Tis why the yards want punch outs and tons of loose screws in drums.

One of my gravel trucks the box was nearing the end of its life went to work at a scrap yard one criteria I had was that they pay for flats.

When I went to cash my check it bounced, and this was a super class yard, no bottle necks with rail and water transport. went back to the yard office and explained to Ms Woods what had happened with the check she told me to try again in a couple of days as they had just borrowed 5 million from the bank. Couple days later I had cash in hand.

The funny part is that I had a hired hand on the gravel truck while I hauled in the odd scrap car, two weeks later the gates are barred and locked, some of you from B.C. may remember Cleansteel in Surrey owned by Freddy Berman. Within the year Mr. Berman opened a new yard located in Victoria B.C. on Vancouver Island.

You sure these are steel screws? Check them with a magnet and make sure thiere not ss or brass. If they load them and you can haul them in one trip then 50% would be a good quick pay check.

This has turned into an ongoing job. Some of the stuff is copper, #2 insulated, and cast aluminum. Get this: he considers the wire trash, and on the cast aluminum I am still paying him 4-5 cents per pound. Guess I worried needlessly.

nice work getting an ongoing gig. They are always good.

Several years ago I read (it musta been in a scrapyard, dunno where or when) that if you filled a 44 gallon (US 55 Gallon) drum with bolts or screws, you would get about NZ $100 (US$80) MORE than the price for heavy steel.

AND they gave you a exrtra NZ$20-30 because its in a drum....


I have no idea where I found this out, but thats definatly what I remember. I must have read it too, I was not told it.
