new winch and new advertising

had a slow day today so we went and picked up 12000 ramsey from one of our wrecker services we deal with, new motor and new solenoids, to install on our new trailer, in between i bought a 03 sunfire and flipped it on the way home to a body shop that we deal with regularly. tonight i went by one of the local supermarkets where we purchased a sign on a park bench for two years, its also at another location across town

Good idea on the park bench! Did you check with the HVAC company on the sign next to yours about their scrap? Gotta love a YARD WITH NO SNOW!!!!

thanks guys, the ramseys are probably all we will get from now on, we burnt up two warns over the last year(one was self inflicted), we got three of the ramseys now and same solenoids and motor on all three, steve rebuilt the 2nd one we got so he knows all the ins and outs.

the signs were a bargain, a little over $10 a month for two locations paid up front for two years. not yet on the hvac but i will but most of the guys down here take care of their own but i will call next time i go by and get the rest of the number :) . The yard you bet, we got about 6 weeks of danger for winter weather left, we rarely get snow in march

I dig your setup Cory, I am also looking for a 5 ton+ winch for my deckover trailer. The one I have has tilt feature and is dovetail, any recommendations on your behalf? I am worried about the steel cable rubbing when pulling a car or something on the trailer. I would have to weld a bracket like yours as well, also I like the portable winches that hook up into a 2" tow receiver. You can remove it so no one swipes it, but I wonder wich is best? any input appreciated. Also my trailer has a battery to run the hydraulics, I guess you need a verry good battery to run these winches. I wonder also if I can install a hydraulic winch to run off the pump or should I stick to electric

with your volume, you prbably get a higher price than they do at the yard. maybe you can make an offer that saves them the trip to the yard

all of mine are electric, the wrecker guys swear by hydraulic but i have no experience with them. the rice trailer in the pic has a hydraulic tilt also and came with a marine battery. i welded two braces on the upright on the front of the trailer and welded the plate to the braces, then bolted the winch to the plate. i installed it this way so the cable wouldnt rub my trailer verses mounting it on the front. i bought a new marine battery at sams club today just for this winch (i know ive got alot of free ones) so ill have one battery for the winch and one for the tilt. these batteries at sams club have a one year warrenty and ive already swapped in the one on my dovetail a few months ago and you get a new warrenty on your replacement date. im still working on where to mount the winch battery, im thinking of welding a box under the floor. im gonna try to get some pics before it gets dark of what i have done

edit, dave on the dovetail as far as i know there is nothing you can do to keep the cable from rubbing and loading a vehicle it pulls better on the lowest point of the car you can hook to

cory nicew set up but i disagree with your love of ramsey and hate or warn warn planataries suck bit the worm gears are the best i rind ramsey winch engage for freespool modes leave way to much to be desired they slip far to much

i dont know if its a love :) , at the time of purchase it was what we could afford, one ramsey came on the tow truck, the 2nd one we paid 150 for, put on a $90 motor and changed the fluids and new solenoids we have a little over $300 in it. it has slipped a few times but never more than 2 inches. the one we got from the wrecker service we only paid 400 for it. as far as the warns go one of them was a good winch but it just couldnt handle our abuse and we beat those cast casings to death. the one thing i miss about the warns is that they are twice as fast


Im gonna have to use it pretty quick to. i got a call a few minutes ago from the same wrecker guy i got the winch from and he gave me a number and said to call it quick. 75 cars from one spot, about 20 burnouts and about half of the 75 are complete :) im gonna meet the guy tomorrow with both trucks and try my best to make a deal. I'M HOPING THIS IS THE ONE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR :)

I feel you need a brace on each side of the frame from the top back before the tie down. I think you will bend that baby the way it is.

ive thought about welding a gusset on each side of the winch and if that happened it would press into the wood, im also going to rewind the winch so the cable is coming from the bottom instead of the top just from a leverage point on bending the tubing. most cars will free role and it wont be an issue at all. sometimes im missing wheels or hubs or rearends are locked up and thats an issue, wrecks are the hardest but i think with the smooth ramps it will make it easier than it was. if i woulda had this trailer at your house the sunken wheels wouldnt have been a problem :) i coulda just lifted it out :) learning as i go i cant really find anyone that has a setup like mine to copy off of but im hoping for a trial run tomorrow

edit hey frank im trying to remember that trailer, is it long enough and wide enough to haul a car, my 94 cummins is still looking for a car hauler if its for sale that is

its funny you say this, harbor freight has a 5watt or amp for 14.99 i looked at it alot today and set it back on the shelf, i put batteries on a charger everynight so something like that would be nice to have

If you have the room to build a mirror brace under the frame and bolt them together you should be ok. Yea it would have made it easier to get it out. I started to suggest me yank it out with my truck then you hook onto it.

The H frame in the back was about 1200 lbs and buried in the dirt took a couple of yanks and it was out. If I'd had the tires you had I could have just put it in low and tugged on it :)

Maybe set the hub on a piece of 2X6" and with a little grease between them it should slide as your dragging it onto the trailer. Maybe,,,

oh we have our tricks :) i turn a floor jack into a spare tire works almost everytime on a hard surface or on the trailer, ur idea is similar to what we do on a soft surface we jack up the car and slide a piece of fender under the tire or hub and it works like a sled. extreme situations is where the problems ar, on average and just a guess here probably 1 in 20 we have problems with, we have come a long ways ive got it on here somewhere but the first car we loaded took us hours, flat tires, buried up and no key, of course we had a comealong and ratchet straps, we ended up breaking the comealong, we didnt have alot of money back then but went to walmart and bought an airtank and a little reese winch rated for like 1500lbs or 2000 and would alternate the winch and a ratchet strap releasing tension on each one. we used that little winch for a few cars and worked really well if evreything was free on the car

Cory, your posts always remind of the days I'd go with my grandfather to work. He ran wrecked/totaled cars from all over Va, to bring back to the lot in fredricksburg, va. The many times me and my cousin helped stick a bumper where a tire woulda been, for a soda an a hotdog no less. LOL. Yea,we were cheap labor. lol

Back in the day when cars and trucks had steel chrome bumpers, we had a piece of pipe about 3" round and 6' long. In the middle was a hunk of chain with about 2' sticking out of each end with a hook. If we were towing a vehicle we would put the pipe in between the two vehicles and take the chain and wrap it around the chrome bumper and lash it tight. Put one person in the vehicle to steer and the pipe would help do the braking if you kept it centered between the two vehicles. That way you did not have to worry about no good brakes or hitting the tow vehicle in the a$$.
