I have a guy who just walked into my shop with 210 lbs of ram.. It's all assorted. He is telling me he can get me this much ram once a week. I find it hard to believe but I am not going to argue with him.. He wants a "good" number. I am pretty sure he was selling it to a scrap yard up the block for like $4.00 per lb. He came at me with some big numbers like $12-$13 per pound. Anyone else think this is an easy 20% flip?
Do it, nothing easyer then throwing the ram into a box and shipping it off same day you get it. With that much weight it makes up for the margin your giving up. Plus if hes getting this much RAM where are the rest of the parts going?
yeah it's a good question for sure. I tried to poke him a bit for more info. He was as shady as they come and I am in the process of obtaining R2 certs so I don't want to get too crazy. Tho, if I can keep him around 12.50-13 I can throw the other 100 lbs of ram I have been waiting to ship out.Quote:

You only be profiting about $1 to $3 per lb, but for that quantity, might be worth it.
Can do at least 2 transactions to test the waters with.
If you think he is willing to negotiate and he started off with $12-$13 I would hit him back with $8/lb if your fairly sure he is only getting $4 a pound now. THe key is do you think he is willing to negotiate or just walk out if you offer him $8/lb.
Sounds like a winner deal.

I tend to get some relatively complete servers/towers... I recently did a load of about 10,000 lbs of towers/servers and got about 25 lbs of ram out of it. So.. that load probably consisted of 75% towers so figure 350-375 towers and about 60 servers. The servers were chock full of memory. So to get 8 times that amount you are processing at least 80k lbs of towers/servers... Based on my very very rough estimates.. me thinks he is buying it from a bunch of people for very little and trying to make some quick money..Quote:

Did you see all 200+ POUNDS? Did he roll it in on a cart? Make sure you have someone close by when you do this deal! He could take your cash and his memory and run! People would do this for an easy $2500.00
I would tell him $10.00 a pound after you see it and weigh it. After all you still need to pay to ship it out!
be sure you photograph and id him
make sure you weigh the ram and not the boxes. some people have tricks to make boxes heavier and through off the weights. sounds like a great deal but trust your instincts too!

The more I think of it, will he take a check? As he has lots more on a regular basis. Better to have some kind of paper trail...

Thats why we love escrap and unknowledgeable customers. Love when they blatantly dont care / throw money away like that. You show me you have money, its a sure bet im gonna help you spend it. Most of my clients are local scrappers so they dont have nice rigs and want way too much for there stuff. Id love to have a deal like that go down. And odds are if hes gonna give away mixed ram/ cpus that cheap he also has a huge supply of boards you can tap into also.Quote:

Same guy.. just clean shaven this time and a bit more friendly and comfortable. First time he was a little unsteady.. He wants to come by after hours for the next delivery. I told him that would not be possible. But.. I will just try to protect myself as best as I can. I have enough employees and security in my building to prevent anything too crazy from happening. Make sure all the deals happen on my terms.. and he was pretty ecstatic about getting 12 per lb.. And I was more than happy paying it.. Especially now that I am going through everything and it is mostly gold ram with maybe 10 lbs of silver/tin.. maybe another 10 lbs of rambus which I am going to clean up. Market seems to be taking a tumble and gold is on the rise.. Might just hold off til next year and wait for the new numbers. Either way, feel pretty confident with the purchase.. Already sorted out about 45 sticks of 1gb memory.
Not a bad deal for the last Friday before Christmas. The boxes were marked "Harvest" when i was emptying them out. It looked like a restoration/moving company was doing a mini operation and was aware of the value of the ram.. But not entirely sure what its exact worth was.
Great haul! Hope it keeps going well for you. I would wait until the first of the year personally. See if we dive off this supposed "fiscal cliff" and the market panics (gold goes up). Either way, good job!
