Do you sell windshields from your scrapped cars?

How far do you go in parting out the cars you scrap. I don't have a flatbed towtruck, but I got a car last week, paid $100 got $248 for it. Seems I could have done much better. I'm thinking of setting up an operation in my shop and stripping: windshield, usable doors, batteries, cats, taillight lenses, engines, tires if good and wheels. Anything else I should strip?

Of course if I remove tires and wheels I have to pay to have the carcass taken in for scrap.

Are some of these items a waste of time? Just looking to maximize profits.

The yard I uses pays a little extra for the complete car and totally strips each one in their warehouse.......So yes if you are getting alot of cars it is worth strippin......Ever heard of these pull-a-part yards they make big money selling aftermarket parts.........If you only get a car every now and then flip em quick and get rid of em

I've bought some parts off a blazer before it was scrapped like switches, pair of window cranks and a pair of sun visors. i paid 19 bucks for all, haggled em from 20.

There is lots of money is used auto parts

It requires time and space. You can choose whether to hold the car and list it, or strip off some good parts and scrap the rest.

And you didnt list it but the cat is the money in cars for lots of buyers

Thanks, Mike, that's kind of what I was thinking. Probably could have sold it more to an individual looking for a motor, but it's been tight and I needed the cash. Also if I strip parts I could be sitting on a lot of inventory filling up my real estate pretty fast.

Seems like you sell the power window motors for pretty good money but then again I'm not a car guy.

Only have done one car. At minimum cut off the cat, take the battery, cut the battery cables and wiring you can reach. I'm no expert on vehicles. That alone should net you at least another 50$.

You can also pull the alternator, radio, and the furry dice off of the rear view mirror. Don't forget to check the ashtray and inbetween the seats for spare change.

one most overlooked item is the clutch pedal mounting bracket. Anyone working on vehicles a lot will eventually run into a case of swapping from standard to automatic, or maybe vice versa. Those pedal mounting brackets are critical when going to a stick shift

Yeah, Mechanic, I've been thinking about one of those. Never thought about yanking tires at the yard, though. Good idea!

If your thinking of parting out cars it may be a good idea to target certain make and models. My kid wheels and deals in Honda parts as there is a constant demand for regular and parts that the "tuners" desire. Any B16 series motor will bring money even if it needs to be rebuilt.

I can tell you that is a good tow dolly, I have used one like it. But it dosen't like big trucks, I hauled 5 trucks Ford and Chevy and by the time I was finished both of the fenders were gone.

Notice that tow dolly is a 3000lb capacity which does not allow you to haul larger vehicles.....Also when I used to haul alot of junkers they were often on flats or so buried in the woods a tow dolly wouldn't help........

I was thinking more and more about this, and so I asked my father in law. He told me that auto body repair shops will sometimes make you offers on car parts depending on the make, model, year and what condition the said part is in.

My father in law will sometimes pay me for parts from vehicles depending if he has an upcoming need for it, or if he knows he is always needing that part on cars. It gives me money, and helps him to make money as he doesn't have to pay out the rear on parts.

Also, I was asking him about the windshields. He said the same thing. The auto body repair shops that do windshields might make an offer depending on how much in demand that particular windshield is in. Also if you contact small to medium sized window repair companies, then they might be interested as well.

This sounds great to me! I only get vehicles when I am cleaning foreclosure homes, but hell, anything above the normal $300 a car is nice!

scrapping cars is in my honest opinion an artform i have stripped cars to the frame and junked them whole and the secret is year make and model more thant the car itself cars that are really really nice i take off doors fenders hoods grilles headtailights spare tires

mostly though just starters alternators batteries cats tires /rims i can usually process that on roadside in 3 minutes or less

I look at eBay, and then the time involved before I decided whether to rip something out or not. I also have access to an AllData account, so I can get all the correct procedures to do everything that I need. Somethings just aren't worth it to me, time vs reward wise. Other things I'll do even though they only return $10 an hour, mainly because I like a challenge.

I'm into it for about $525 (includes my diesel to pick it up, and the eventual cost of diesel for the 25 mile round trip ride to the boneyard), but I've already returned the following:
Cat Converters $225
Left T/lamp $25
Dash Vent assembly $25

Plus I have the weight of the car (roughly 1.5 tons * 200ish) and the aluminum wheels ($60 in scrap minimum)

I've probably got another $400-1000 in stuff that I can pull and sell.

we done a beamer this year we got 200 for cat we paid 300 for our car and it has been one of our best selling parts in different areas, we have branched out and pull alot more than we did, we pull of course cats batteries and radiators, now my partner works under the hood while i rip out the dash we pull out all the wire within reason some harnesses are over 2 inches thick, once i get to that point the heater core and airconditioning radiator is right there and thats enough for lunch for the day so i knock them out with a 3lb sledge, anyway depending on your yard they should pay %30 to %60 on wiring harnesses. dont forget gas, we get lots of gas from cars, also most cars you junk out will have new quarts of oil, transfluid, antifreeze not to mention jumper cables, cds dvds tools spare change, i even sold hamster cages that was in a saturn a few weeks ago, so your not limited to anything and the skys the limit

don"t forget to rip out center consoles i"ve found gold earings silver morgan dollars you"ld be amazed what falls between seat usually alot more than french fires

As much copper wire as you can snip in 10 - 15 mins, Some of the cars have nice THICK wire runs

As mentioned aluminum wheels, if they look decent put on Craigs, other wise about $15.00 each
One lug before you leave for the yard so you are not trying to break lose a hard one while the loader is waiting on you
I picked up a used rim clamp machine years ago for a couple hundred. Has paid for itself many MANY times

I pull easy to pull >> Easy to store >> easy to ship
Head Light assemblies
Tail Light assemblies
window motors
master switches in the drivers door
climate control
Side mirrors
some dash clusters
some cargo covers
I also sell some rims on eBay, the BMW's sell GREAT

I have a semi local core company that I can run the vin and it will give me a list of cores and what they pay
Some of the ECM's run towards a hundred
But then you have things like water pumps for a dollar
REALLY a Dollar!? I wouldn't open the hood for a dollar, let alone have to lift a wrench

Our car price just dropped yesterday to $170.00 a ton
It was $230 a ton on May 31st
First week of June it had dropped all the way to $110.00 and was making a comeback
Has been $180.00 for a couple weeks

I have a couple times in the past
Person pays me for the windshield
Then they can take it out and carry it home
In one piece or MANY
Depends on how good they are

I can only have 2 or 3 cars in the yard at a time or the wife complains
So unusually for a call to be here longer then a week

If any of you that do cars have window motors for a 1990 F150 let me know I need a set (I haven't looked around yet so I don't know what they go for - saw the post so I thought I'd ask)

so I make it a point to be sitting at the door when they open
They pay by check drawn on BOA
I pass one of those on the way back to 95 South
