Howdy! Been awhile since i've been on here, but had a question for the experts.
I dont like to pay for anything unless the investment is easy to recoup and/or I'm familiar with the equipment. Havent done consumer electronics/tv's in a long time, but had an opportunity come around. In your opinion, would it be worth paying $25-$40 for about 125 t.v.'s and driving 40 miles to get them? Standard 27"+ tube tv's. Thanks!
Well i'm no expert but in the mean time i'll give you my opinion.
if you don't have anything better to do then go for it.
it would take a lot of time say if you were to cruise around picking them up in hard rubbish,
but then again you would be finding other things aswell.
a lot of work moving them around and then getting rid of them.
do you have a place to offload the scrapped crt's afterwards?
if so then what i'd do is reduce the load into single stacking on your truck, take along your drill, bits & side cutters.
place the tv's on, head straight to the recycle depot that takes the crt's, somewhere, like a 7/11 slurpee stop,
neatly unscrew the backs and scrap all the tv's on your truck, takes just a few minutes per tv, screw the backs on again,
put the boards, yolks, cables, speakers & stuff aside, take off again straight into the depots gate, unload the tv's and your done!
drop the goodies off home, have a cuppa and head off again for the next load, when you finally done, you'll be looking at a garage floor strewn with the awesomeness of copper staring straight back at you, the tv's will be just a distant memory.
Depends have a way to get rid of the tube when you are done?
I would only do it if you have a way to get rid of the tubes. They should pay you to take them...
Having that much weight in CRT's may be against local ordinances in some towns. I vote; no not worth it with the condition of: unless you have room, and unless you have CRT disposal ready and waiting, and unless you have plastic disposal ready as well.
As you can tell the main concern is CRT's. The 27 inch is somewhere around 60 pounds, times 100 is 3 tons of leaded glass on your property.
Not only wouldn't I pay $25, I charge $10 a TV. So I'd charge them $1,250 to take them.
Thanks for the replies! Right now i have a big vacant building to take all the stuff to and can disassemble at my leisure. The question of the tubes is an important one, as I want to "do the right thing" with all the remaining materials. So, this brings up another question I was going to ask that relates: Does anyone know of a good place around Atlanta area that can take the tubes/plastic AND a good place to take my escrap (from computers i get)? I searched this site for referrals but nothing came up (maybe i'm doing something wrong?). Thanks again in advance...you guys are great :)
as a side note, they are on pallets, which i plan on taking as well (about 60+)
You might find you have to pay to have them take the tube.
Look on the venders here for your other e-scrap

I stopped taking TVs altogether. I couldn't keep up with what I had. Disposing of the tubes becomes very cumbersome.
3to5$ profit on each x 125= 500$ on the high side-25$-fuel-your labor time. 6 TVs per hour breakdown. 125/6= 21 hrs. + your disposal time all said and done 125 tv x 50 lbs 6250 lbs handled twice is 12,500 pounds. 6 tons of lifting Plus break down Plus disposal time. With steel at 200 ton x 6 ton you'd make 1200$ or 3x as much. This is why I haul steel not TVs.
I wouldn't pay for them. I never pay for CRT or tvs.
Shendog, looks like everyone has added their two cents about your opportunity. My thoughts are that if you can get rid of the waste responsibly and you need the work then go for it!.
Thanks for all the input. I'm passing on this opportunity based on what everyone said. Good to learn from others before I make a huge mistake, although there is value in trying.
In a pinch I would definitely pay $25 for 125 tvs. I use 55 gallon steel drums that have the rubber-water proof clamp on lids. After scrapping out all of the goodies I smash the CRT's in the steel drum and seal it up and store it inside my workshop.
With an average of $4 to $5 per TV in scrap value, making the $500 to $625 would pay for about 60% of my monthly bills. So, to each his or her own, I guess.
With the CRT's safe from the weather and sealed away; hopefully in time there will become an environmentally safe (and perhaps profitable) way to dispose of them.
Just my humble opinion.

1. Is there a company that will take the CRT Glass after you are done? I know of one that charges for that. It’s minimal but not worth breaking down the TV. If you need a price PM me
2. Does the company that you send the glass to know what they are doing. This one does they take the glass break it down to leaded and un-leaded glass and then sends the leaded to a smelter where they extract the lead and end up with clean glass for roads and possible reflectors on the road.
3. If you break them down and crack or break the glass there is a gas that is in the tube itself if you wear a mask you should be ok otherwise I suggest not doing it.
4. Should you pay for TV’s (NO) you should never pay for TV’s they should be paying you to take them at a rate of about $15-$20 a pop so you can recoup your money after you get your goodies out of it and have to pay to get it processed no matter where you send it.

Just a thought but when people "warn" of the gas in the tube, we should start asking that they provide the name of the gas. Then we'll know what precautions to take.
I think the IUPAC is working on adding vacuum to the periodic table, I think they're shooting for #-1. Lead on the other hand has been stuck at #82 for a while now, whether it's got glass or not.Quote:

Diff states have diff laws from what i have seen just do your best and follow local laws here there are no regulations that i know of
But the dump does seperate e waste

Correct we do process CRT Glass and in some states its considered HAZ Waste.
Some Cities in some states have issued landfill bans on CRT's and electronics in general. Some have not so can it go to the land fill it quite possibly can depending on your state, city, or landfill (some are privatly owned).

we have a state of the art crt recycling facility so i've found and transfer stations to accept tv's free.
have dropped off about 60 tv's this past week already, there's 10 in the car all ready for the mornings drop.
I feel good about tv's again, knowing they'll actually be recycled properly, think I can make a little difference now..
my backyard is once again tv wonderland, although choice tv's now, no biggies unless their flat.
today I had to laugh, I never thought I'd see the day I'd be walking down the street with 2 pink barbie tv's,
but I didn't care, they have in built dvd's so I was excited.

cord cutters got to 'em first, like most tv's I pick up, they are real pro's and follow the hard rubbish cycles like hawks.
took 3 weeks before I got a vacuum with a cord, I pulled it out and it just kept coming, now I prize a vac' with cord.
There is an environmentally safe way......... but not profitable. Even though those crt's are sealed you can still get fined. Dublak glass will recycle smashed crt's but they charge you. The cost will be far less than if the epa finds drums full of broken crt's (even sealed) with absolutely no plan for disposal........Quote:
