Got some attitude at the good will yesterday.

So, the load that I grabbed yesterday had 20 monitors with it. The guy actually said he could find something to do with them (throw them in the garbage), and I was able to fit them in so I took them. As long as the monitors do not out number the towers that I am picking up, I offer as part of my service to take the monitors for free and get them to good will for proper recycling.

I no longer break them down and get the components from them for 2 reasons. 1) I am just too busy these days, and 2) I just clip the cord and leave something on the bone for Goodwill for offering this service. I am not sure how they work things there, but I am sure it is better for them or the service that they use to get the stuff other than the leaded glass and the plastic. I also know not to take advantage of a good thing else risk the chance of it going away.

Anyhoo, I get to goodwill yesterday with 10 of these monitors. They are unloading some big trucksand the unloading area is cordonned off. A guy waves me over and heads out with a cart. I greet him and get out of the truck. I say that I have some non working monitors for them. He looks at them and says "why did you bring them here then"? ( I have been here before and these are the words I always use. I have also unloaded with this guy before so he knows). I took offense immediatelly and said "because you take them for recycling, I saved them from the garbage and you guys are going to rcycle them properly". He dropped the attitude, and then I realised that I was dealing with someone who is slightly handicapped, so I dropped the attitude as well.

I unloaded and parked because we needed another TV for the back porch. This is our third. Always humid back there so we grab a 10 or 15 dollar TV and don't worry about it and just grab another when it craps out.

My ire was raised again very quickly as I can almost not get the small shopping cart through the aisles to get to the TVs and then there are some people that have lawn furniture spread out everywhere and I can't get through at all. I gritted my teth and found a rather long alternate route to the TVs. picked out the $15 V with the best picture and headed to checkout. There were customers there that just agrivated me to all get out. Leaving after checking out and leaving their carts right there. I had to get out of line and clear a path so the rest of us could get to check out.

Then the checkout guy was there. He was the most pleasant individual I ran into there all day. He was the last person I dealt with there, and left a positive image of the experience for me. I noted his name and called the store when I got home. I did not tell them my bad points, but only praised the checkout guy at the end.

Anyhoo again, anyone know the full details of what Goodwill gets from us dropping off our monitors? I recall a post some time ago that it is in their favor as they need to hit a total weight limit or something like that.

They have a contract with Dell to collect E waste, and they are paid for everything they take. I do not know how much, but they are definitely making money on it.

I know from experience through working at a savers a goodwill rival persay that we do not recycle tvs and state we dont take them and its the #1 problem we have is getting rid of them

ahhh, a goodwill rival?? I don't believe goodwill has a rival, at least not in the public sector. When I was injured on a job, and the insurance owned the drs, and the politicians, and everything else that goes with trying to get fixed up and working again, Goodwill was the only one there who stepped up to the plate and said, we can't do much, but we'll do what we can.

Is it a reconnect facility? Many are not. Their description says that nothing is shipped out of the country.

If it is not a reconnect facility, they do not take them.

It's a two way street though Bear. I find more and more it's not just customers with an attitude. I've worked retail. More years then I care to count. From bookstores to toy stores. I've sold it all or most of it in retail. I ever acted as some of these people that currently work in the field and I'da been looking for a new job.

Down here on my sandbar I run into some grouchy people on both sides of the counter, was just up in Va. near Richmond, saw more of the attitude on both sides of the counter, for little or no reason.

If your a customer and your having a bad day..Don't take it out on me. I'm not your ex, your boss, your shrink, or your punching bag. I'm here to do my job. Let's make it pleasant for both of us

If your a worker and Having a bad day .. See above. Don't like your job then quit an stop taking it out on folks trying to spend their money with you! If your not a people person find a job where you know..you don't deal with them. lol.

Very simple rules to follow for both sides. Shame common sense isn't so common.

Oh and that other simple rule..."Treat others as you'd want to be treated."

Each Goodwill seems to have a slightly different policy depending on who runs the place. Its kind of like the post office where each location seems to have a different idea of what Media Mail is supposed to be.

Irresponsible is irrelevant. 9 out of 10 times CRT's end up on the curb already, so in all reality he is reducing how much waste goes to the land fill.

Yeah, it is so irresponsible for me, because I make the rules and regulations for the companies that are SUPPOSED to be recycling these themselves.

I have contacted everyone within a good reasonable driving distance, and no one will accept them gutted. Heck, i have even told them that i would give them to them ungutted, and still no go. Everyone has told me the same thing, they MUST be working and have a remote.

The landfills here that I take everyone junk related to, recycle everything that they get. They have areas for junk, construction debri, mulch, brush debri, you name it. The only thing that actually gets put in the ground, is biodegradable stuff.

The landfills recycle everything and get paid for it all.

I wish I didnt have to resort to trash or the landfill, but I have no choice. So, as I get the TVs, I take a sledge, knock enough of the back off, to grab the degaussing cable and yoke and some of the wire, and then leave the rest and dump it.

When a organization around here actually will take them, then I will be happier than a kid on Christmas to take them to them ungutted.

I actually was having a crappy day a couple of years ago and the guy ahead of me in a checkout line was yapping on his flip phone in a checkout line with a sign saying no cell phone use in line. He was ignoring the cashier and yapping away while it was his turn. I still can't believe I did this but I grabbed his phone and flipped it shut.

The guy spun around with an angry look on his face but I guess my look told him not to push it. The dangerous mood was broken when other patrons began to applaud. He grinned, I grinned, we apologized to one another and concluded our business, shaking hands before we left.

however, since no one takes them then what is the point since they are going to the trash, and yes, I know it was a smart aleck comment.

It really sucks that we have to resort to gutting TVs and then dumping the glass because no real recycling options exist for most of us. I mean were in America, the greatest country on earth, a modernized country and we can't even have proper facilities to process our waste? I wished the govt would subsidize the removal and proper disposal of our "hazardous" waste such as the leaded glass in our crts. I think the EPA realized that they were hindering the process of recycling CRTs rather than helping it with their stringent policies. That is based on this.... Fact Sheet: Easier Recycling of Cathode Ray Tubes | Wastes | US EPA

This is what I am up against here in mass
Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection (MassDEP) regulations state:
Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) from television and
computer monitors are prohibited from all
Massachusetts solid waste disposal facilities.
Thus Natick cannot accept them in trash
collection. These are banned due to the lead
content in the cathode ray tubes.
The Town of Natick will collect and recycle
these items. Computers and televisions are
$25.00 each and are collected as bulky waste.
Please call the Sanitation Division for information.

Goodwill Only accepts working TV's with a remote here in Mass. and refers you to Nh. or Ri. for all other computers and Tv's

There are a lot of electronic recycling companies here in Mass. but it looks like they only accept trailer truck loads by there web sites .

Do I tell you how to run your business? No, I do not, so do likewise.

Also, when you strip them, all you have left is the glass and plastic. Which, as i mentioned before the landfill RECYCLES them. The landfill sell the plastic and glass to someone. Who, well you can call them to ask that question.

No respectable landfill will put stuff that is non biodegradable in the ground. If they do, then report them to the EPA.

I get to make money off the #2 copper and wire, and they make money off the leaded glass and plastic. Win win for everyone.

However, i have been thinking and will implement a new idea, that will make me more money. For the most part 8 to 9 out of 10 TVs that I get all work anyways. So, I will simply just sell them for ridiculously low prices. i belong to a ton of groups online and offline that will love to get a new tv for their kids's room or a small den, or any other reason.

You can think of me what you like Drozenski. But if I was the real "bad guy" that you want to make me out to be, i would simply go in back alleys, or river beds, and dump them. However, I am not like that. Also, you have contacts that i don't have, so just because you have resources for things, doesnt mean we all do.

Yes I'm aware it says resident. Surely you know someone who lives in Fairfax County. It's quite big with 1 mil + in residents last I checked. And if not I'm sure the family and friends I still have in the area would gladly go with or for you if it meant those tv's being disposed of properly. Otherwise I'd highly suggest charging a disposal fee, or just not accepting them. Actually I take that back..use a freaking screwdriver, or drill or whatever if your going to accept them and then leave'm on the curb. Certainly is a tad more professional and look a helluva lot better.

I appreciate you taking the time to look it all up. However, that is the landfill that I use, as they are the cheapest in the area, but accept EVERYTHING as you know already, im sure.

I pay what i consider a small amount to get rid of a trailer load of tvs.

Also, I dont make a mess. Only mess that you see on the tvs is a medium sized hold in the back. When I am done, I shove the broken plastic back into the carcass, and to the landfill it goes, or to the trashmen.

To be honest, been a long time since i gave any to the trash guys. Normally, i break the TVs down from the junk jobs on spot, and away they go.

And yes, before someone says something, my clients do ask me sometimes why i do it. I tell them, and they tell me that is a good idea.

Haha fair enough figured ya knew about it, but you never know. For any others in the Northern Va area..not sure on Fairfax county, but with Loudon's electronic day, you can drop up to 12 for free.

What got me was the smash with a sledge part, that sets up bells in my head for when them fools come along and smash the tubes an make a huge ol'mess. I see sledge, tv, curb..an../rage! :P

No need to apologize. I would have thought the same thing myself, I am sure.

I just use a small sledge as it is the easiest thing available to make a big enough hold. Then I reach in, yank the degausing cable and yoke and what wire i can grab, and done.

I dont care for the curbside shoppers that smash and go either. They give everyone else a bad reputation.

I am very careful and conscious about things that I do. I have to small children to come home to every day, so the little bit of dollars isnt working leaving a big mess, and having the cops track me down lol

What got me was, that i figured at least 1 out of the 10 Goodwills around would take them, but nope.

I drove around the back of there building and there is a truck scale with a scale house there , they were closed , but the door was open and they have a LOT stacked up inside .

If You read there web site , they are geared for city and town recycling days for a fee , and they offer a lot of things we don't need , like secure data destruction .

Use Bing Birdseye Maps to look at there building , they are the building on the East side with the trailers backed into the woods across from there loading docks . The Dark Shadow on the edge of the woods , is the trailer truck scale .
We might have this option ? It works for Mick up in maine .

Well, I took the other 10 monitors in yesterday and got not a lick of flack from them. Even got asked if I needed a tax receipt and was given a thank you when I left. That was a worker that knows they are making a little something off of them.
