Metal halide Lamp fixtures (236)

I am not familiar with this forum, but after reading some of the posts I hope someone here can help me. I own a large building in NE Ohio that we are replacing all the lighting in. I have to get rid of 236 metal halide light fixtures. They are about 16 years old, but were not used for 6 of those years. All are working now. They are the 270 volt variety and will be completly removed from the ceiling and located to the rear parking area of the building. I will NOT be selling these but just need a reliable scrapper to make arrangements to remove them all over a 3 week period.

I apologize if this post is inappropriate or not within the rules of the forum, I am just too new here to tell.

The project will start in about a month. I hope you can get my email from here and I will also monitor this forum for questions.

Again, if this is against moderators rules, I apologize. I just thought it would make someone a good opportunity to make some money.

If I was anywhere near, I'd be all over these. Very good opportunity. Just need to plan on disposal of the glass. If any wants, look in my back threads for halite fixtures.

It is in Warren, Ohio on elm rd.

I use to live in Ashtabula county near route 11. I have a lot of friends who are interested from back home, but have no kind transportation for this size of a load. I will keep asking around.

I also can put my hands on about 75 of these lights. What is the process to get the most out of them? Do the ballasts go in the electric motor pile?

Just cashed in the cast aluminum on 7 1000w metal halide units and got $31.50. I still need to find a source for the copper windings assembly. Some have said that they take it as electric motor rate but ALTER Metals said no today. I wonder why they say no yet others have had luck. Is it better for me to cut the bands and just cash in the copper?

Call some other yards. If it is indeed copper windings and not aluminum and not too contaminated with other junk, someone should take them as CBM or break them down.

You should be able to get transformer price on the "copper windings", as that is what they are. Price should be from .22-.32/lb.

Are the transformers laminations (the flat metal 'I's & 'E's that are the iron in a transformer) 'stacked'-http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...HiZjO4vlbUZlJg
or 'interlaced'.

If they are 'stacked' they will be easy to break apart. Then the copper windings just fall out.

If they are 'interlaced' the best way to get to the copper is to use a big anglegrinder to cut off the copper windings from one side of the transformers. And then use a punch & hammer to punch the rest of the copper winding out thru the iron core.
Or use a hammer & a big meat cleaver sort of thing to cut one side of the copper off. Then punch the rest of it out.

This is an old thread, but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for, and also wanted to get the most current info .... I may be able to acquire some old gym light fixtures from a school. They are identified as 400W Hallide lights. This may sound dumb (as I know nothing about these), but what key questions should I ask prior to saying yea or nay on picking them up? In reading about these on threads, sounds like there are issues with "tar" in ballasts, etc.? I don't want to end up with a hazardous material on my hands (literally), but I also don't want to pass up an opportunity. If anybody has scrapped any of these lately and has any tips, I'd appreciate it. I also understand that 70s-era fixtures may contain PCB's which are a bad thing, but I am under the impression these are more recent.

My yard has a ballast category as long as they contain no pcbs. Call a few in the area and see if they take them as is. 400 watts there will probably be a coup!e in each light.
I have pulled one apart but what a time consuming mess. Fill a bucket and sell em.

Is the metal strip inside the capacitor worth anything. Looks like tape paper lol

Aluminium foil, highly oxidised & contaminated with capacitor oil & commingled with equal weight of paper.

Its something that would take too much time and mess to seperate, but adds weight to 'Shred'.
