My yard tickets are hard to read and material just shows s. I'm getting 12.5 cents/pound and have been removing all contamination. I've been doing grills, smokers, washers, dryers, bed frames and so on. Does this sound like I'm getting shred? Are these items considered shred since its non structure steel? What have you guys been getting for this stuff? Thanks
Well if you figure .125 x 2000 you are getting 250/ton thats pretty good.
Light gauge metals and appliances always go as shred. I wish I was getting 250 a ton!

I think I'm at 145 a short ton, will find out today.
Took my tickets in today and shred is down to 130 a ton. Isulated wire is down just a little and aluminum radiators and cast aluminum are actually up a couple of cents. Go figure that one!
depending on your yard, you may be working harder than you need to. May be a good idea to ask them, or pay close attention to others unloading, just how "clean" it needs to be. ie, i take loads of pc cases in. i get the same price regardless of if I leave the plastic fronts on or not. saves me having as much plastic to deal with and the time to tear it all off to take it someplace else. (I have a place that I can take it free, that is a mile from home, so NO... I am not just putting it in the trash) ;-) my 2 BroJer

My shred I leave the micro doors on and stuff them with 5 cents a pound stuff !!
The yards here use 1/8" as the separation point ( some others I've read about use 1/4" ) No thickness at any point can be under that, or it is light/long iron/tin/shred (all same price)
From what I read - Shred, Tin and Light Iron are used to refer to the same thing. White goods would also be included with any of these, although "White Goods" usually refers to appliances. Bed frames, Bicycle frames and similar would go there too. Small tires, such as lawn mower and bicycle tires are usually ok. Generally, anything that is usual to the primary thing being scrapped is ok (ie: plastic trays in dishwashers and refrigerators (from which freon has been evacuated)). Generally, this category will be priced the lowest of all metals (excluding cars). Basically, throw all your magnetic scraps in this pile.
My yard calls it sheet iron scrap. As of yesterday ( 6-14 ) it was at 220 a ton. Was at 245 a ton before it dropped on the first of june

The most I've ever gotten was $210/ton (heavy iron). Currently down to $150 for shred as of my last trip on Monday.
I have gotten anywhere from $130-$210 (closer to $130 lately) for tin. It sounds like you are getting "#1 Unprepared". That is what I usually get when I clean things up and cut the metal to under 4ft. If it is 1/4inches or more in thickness and cut under 4ft. my yard will give me "#1 HMS" price which is around $260-$290/ton.
My advice to you is if you are getting tin price, dont bother to clean things up. My yard takes whatever as long as it has some metal on it (within reason). I have taken in metal christmas trees, old baby strollers, and appliances with lots of plastic on them. Make sure that it is worth your while in time to get a better price. For me, to clean up steel sometimes isnt worth it because I only get an extra 3-4 cent per pound. Also keep in mind that you loose weight from the plastics and other materials that you remove making it less than 3-4cent per pound more. Who knows you might even make more if you dont clean it up and dont get the upgrade in price because of the extra weight. If it is quick and easy and im not loosing a lot of weight I will go ahead and clean it up. If not, I will save my time and just load it into my truck.
With steel my yard isnt that concerned about contamination, as long as it is mostly cleaned up I will get the "#1 unprepared" price. Opposed to other metals that are non-ferrous my yard will downgrade the price even if there is just a little bit of contamination. So, with non-ferrous metals it seems to be worth it to spend a little time to clean them up. Ferrous dont spend too much time to cleanup for an upgrade in price.
oh, I forgot to mention I usually put any Coaxial cables in an appliance to get tin price instead of .02/lb.
When I do a load of #1HMS I usually throw in any small metal scraps and any copper breakage (I try to get most of the copper out of the breakage but, whatever is too hard to get out I put with the #1HMS).

Here in Pittsburgh you will almost never be more than 15 minutes from the scrap yard. When you walk into the yard remember they ae not doing you a favor by taking your metal nor are you doing them a favor bringing them your metal. I know some of you guys struggle with your yards, but most of mine ill be glad to educate you as to what they expect. I have been doing this for quite a while and always ask the yard how they want things. It seems to me that everyone values the cost of labor. Every yard here I have talked to would rather take my stuff and put it in the right category to be shipped off.
The guy that works the scale is the man. Make friends with him and you will earn more over time. Often grading is at his discretion.
