where do you usually go to do your metal detecting??

fishing and scrapping, luckily they are my occupations so life is good. I fish all week take saturday off then break what the ol'lady finds all week on sunday.

Mostly old parks, old schools, farm fields where a house once stood, relative's old homes.... basically any place that is old & has human activity there a long time. One of my oldest coins (1856 seated liberty dime) came from a park that dated back to at least 1875. It was worn so thin that it must have been lost near the 1920s.

I love metal detecting I just have trouble figuring good places to go. My hobbies include: Scraping, surfing, downhill longboarding, gardening, kayaking & fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, trading stocks, hiking and mushroom hunting, camping, 4 wheeling, and working on cars.

Scrapping and gambling...both can be addictive..let's throw in beer drinking while we're at it..

Hunting,fishing,running after 3 year old boy, a 9 year old girl, and a 11 year old girl who thinks she's going on 21. Oh and drinking beer after they go to bed ;)

I've gone metal detecting with my brother before, a little slow for me, but exciting when you find something cool! My biggest hobby is strongman(like on ESPN). Lifting random heavy stuff is what I call fun!! hehe. Kinda what got me interested in scrapping in the first place. besides that hunting, fishing, archery, disc golf, and whatever else can challenge me.

What's a good metal detector to get. I used my step dads before but I think his was just a cheap one.

I have the GARRETT INFINIUM LS which is a pulse induction detector, not recommended for places where humans frequent. The PI metal detectors do not discriminate between trash and treasure. On the other hand they do a very good job at finding metal objects that are deep in the ground.

For places were humans go for fun and pleasure I would suggest getting a good VLF detector.

My girlfriend had a cheap White and I had another Garrett and her White would find way more coins than my more expensive detector,If metal detecting turns your crank I suggest that you join a club and just hang around on some of the outings long enough to see which detectors are finding the goodies before laying out that hard earned cash.

Never take a mans word that his metal detector is the best, as far as I'm concerned my Infinum is the best but may not be the machine for you. It really boils down to where you plan to hunt as to which detector is going to be best for you, buy two.

Which metal detector are you using, is your detector just as good at hunting in the parks as on highly mineralized beaches. At what depth was your average find. How many false digs do you do in a day of hunting, in other words is you detector good at discriminating between trash and treasure.

I want to purchase another detector for use in highly populated areas your answers could help me make that decision on which one to purchase.

I use an older white's electronics Spectrum XLT ....which is the same as the newer model just called "XLT", but they stopped selling them a few years ago. Mine doesnt work well on beaches. I tried it out in england years ago & it had problems. The salt water I assume. Average depth?... I dont know how to answer that....Deepest is probably about 9 inches for a coin sized object & THAT is just barely reading it as "something" and not accurately showing what it might be. I'd say its pretty capable at discriminating out trash for the most part, but there are some sought after objects that will always register the same as trash.

Note: you see a lot of trash in some of those pictures because I was looking for gold rings & you gotta dig up pulltabs & misc, trash to find them.

Between part time farm work, part time construction labor, and full time scrapping, I make time for one hobby.

I figure everyone needs to do something they consider fun, just for the love of doing it occassionally. Keeps ya sane!

Besides, once I gut a car, every ounce of non ferrous gets salvaged from it. Win/win.

Mine to is metal detecting.
Nice finds do you hunt the dirt or water myself I hunt the water don't like all the trash in the dirt I hunt with an Excal II 1000 10 inch coil love that machine.

I use a Garrett 2500 GTI, my dad is starting to get the hang of his Minelab ETRAC.

i like to ride bike's(motor and pedal), lowRiding, gold refining and old cars.

Hunting, fishing, camping, mudin, country music. steam engines, hit and miss engines. tractors. pretty much anything old. oh ya and scrapping

Sweet finds!!!...especialy that 1877 25cent...

I also detect,...i can walk out of the woods with 2 pounds of shell brass somtimes,or somtimes rusty nails only...lol,...
I also like collecting old med/quack bottles aswell which i find detecting...

I own one metal detector and when I went to the beach I always took it there and it can give me some surprises. and I also can take it to the park to or find the metal goods, such as coins and so on. It has also helped find the ring that I lost in the garden,this is really great.

I am also a metal detecting enthusiast. I've got an Underground Gold Treasure Metal Detector with 3.5 Meters Depth. It helps find several unknown coins, maybe in the time during the WWII.

I keep salt water aquariums.

I currently have several reef tanks, like this:

I also have a few octopi, one being a blue ring which is a pretty interesting little octopus.

I have several salt water sharks, a small black tip reef shark that is starting to get too big, I'll probably have to donate him to a large marine aquarium or Marine World or something along those lines. I also raise and breed epaulette sharks, I have a few leopard sharks and even a woebegone along with a few rays and skates.

I have been keeping salt water aquariums since 1987, if anyone is interested in this type of hobby, I would be more than happy to help.

Mine is, Hunting, Trapping, Fishing, Pick up trucks, spotting (When we're not really spotting :x), PC and Xbox gaming, and fixing and learning more about electronics. Oh and of course Scrapping cause its fun as h311

Harassing the wife, annoying the dogs, emptying the traveling cooler, an some gaming here an there. oh an I find time here and there to read, read, read some more, an chill out listening to music while enjoying the frosty beverages of the cooler. :p

Are those muzzle loader bullets actual civil war era or just newer ones from people going hunting with vintage muzzle loaders?

what is a good metal detector to use

i use a fisher f4, it works really good, ive heard the minelab brand is the best but they can be pricey

get a folding shovel and a set of headphones to use with it

how much does one of them cost?

a good beginner detector is in the $200-$400 range, mine was about $300 with everything, it seems to me like the detectors that use 2 9 volt batteries have deeper ground penetration

I have thought about going metal detecting around the old mines in Northern California, there are so many spots, and people seem to be finding precious metals on a fairly regular basis. But I know nothing about metal detecting at all, and would be totally lost.

Not to mention I just don't have the time right now.

I'm also envious of those of you who live in places where you can go metal detecting and find all those really cool items that are so old. The East Coast seems like it would be a lot of fun to go metal detecting on the weekends.
