I have a question to anyone who could answer it for me, I have been coming into a lot of TV's where I live and I know that they do not have a lot of metal and the boards in them are low grade, would it be worth wasting my time and effort in tearing them down????

I echo the other replies and offer this: TVs were my intro to scrapping. They are plentiful, easy to figure out, and can have a variety of materials. No, they won't give you the most money per pound, and you have to deal carefully with the flyback capacitor and be responsible with the CRT, but as a confidence builder and reinforcing the belief that I can always find something when I go curb shopping, they have been well "worth it" to me.
Depends, if you have a safe and viable way to recycle the tube (Best Buy, Goodwill) then they can generate $3.00 - 5.00 ea.
Absolutely worth it to me! The tube style ones have a yoke with a good bit of copper plus a degaussing cable of copper. Add in the boards, wiring, speakers, and electric cord for a nice bit of material. Easy to find and easy to tear down plus Best Buy will recycle the tube and shell for free.
All day long. But like people have said above they are really worth it if you have a good way to recyclable the tubes for free. Good luck to you and I echo what everyone else has said. Read Read and Read. I spent a two weeks reading old posts and learned more than I could believe.
I'm going to answer a question with a question . Do you have a strong back ? Some of those tvs weigh over 150 lbs .

Well I was mistaken! Spotted one of these old 1950 wooden console models today with the pressboard back removed. 30 seconds with my cordless and I had a nice copper yoke. Still ain't picking the darn thing up.Quote:

You literally can't give these things away. A quick skim of the free section of Craigslist and you'll find quite a few. Luckily, my local dump takes CRTs and other electronics for free (I'm guessing they have one of those buyers that will send them to Canada...I'll have to ask next time I'm there) so if I'm low on stuff to break down (not the case right now!), I might grab one if I see it. I usually charge $5 a piece to take them, though, as I'm expanding into junk removal as well as 'just' scrapping. If it's a big and heavy one and I have to bring it up/down stairs or it's going to be a project, I'll quote a higher price or just pass. A woman gladly forked over $25 (and a working PC) just so I would get the monstrosity out of her apartment. Worked out well since we needed a TV for our bedroom, so pure profit there.
So for me, at this point, usually not worth my time. The winter may be a different story, though, since there will be some down time and I will need to squeeze every little bit out that I can.
For you? Gather the information and decide if it's worth it. There's no blanket 'yes or no' on this one. The CRT TVs and PC monitors are always a subjective decision. Good luck!
On a similar note: is there much of a market for tv boards? I'm doing a bunch of them and monitors and wondering if it's worth pulling and throwing in a box for later. I don't do any escraping at the moment and don't have any plans to do so. I just hate the thought of passing them up if they have value
For me they are worth .18 a lb after I pull the heatsinks, transformers, chokes, and occasionally you'll find a gold plated plug in or some gold legged transistors. Of course you'd already know this if you'd done some reading up on breaking down tv's.Quote:

I don't know specifically...all I know is that, from what I understand, the Canadian government subsidizes the recycling of CRTs (the actual tubes that make them heavy and are worthless to us) so it becomes profitable up there. I THINK there is a buyer here on the forums in Rochester and I know there's a company in Buffalo that will come and haul them away and pay a little bit by weight (but it becomes worth it since the TVs are so **** heavy) but you have to have a full semi-trailer load. I would do some googling and searching around here. If you're close to the border, then you may be able to find someone in Canada who will take pickup loads and pay for them. But basically, it's up to you to figure out transportation an logisticsQuote:
