Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone uses or gives a client a Certificate of Destruction when picking up systems from clients or businesses for there hard drives? I am looking for some samples and/or trying to create my own and thought I see if anyone has good example I could see.

Word to the wise. If you plan to offer certs of destruction I would advise you to have at least $1,000,000 in liability insurance. That way if something does go wrong and data gets stolen your covered.
I offer HD burning I melt them in my fire pit for them. I remove the boards first them crack them open with a hammer in they go. DOD certified erasing software is not often compliant with the DOD. The best and only secure way is total destruction.
I sell no hard drives for any reason.

etack is right. Some programs are not up to DOD standards even if they say they are. You need to use a good program if your going to resell drives. With that being said. You can wipe a drive 30 times and if you want to spend enough time and money the info can still be recalled. The only way to garuntee data destruction is complete physical destruction. Now is this really needed? For government and medical stuff yes. For your average home computer NO. If you wipe a drive to DOD standard and have proof that you did wipe the drive and someone takes the time and money to recover the drive and then steals the data. Guess what your covered. You may still get sued but anyone can sue anyone for any reason. I could sue etack for slander right now if I wanted to. Would I win? Nope. Thats where the liability insurance I talked about earlier comes in. If you have the insurance and someone decides to sue you then let them fight it out in court.
The more liability insurance the better the lawyer(s) the insurace compay provides to represent you. Mike.

I would like to know as well if anyone does certificates of destruction for the customers. I have been asked that before, and would like to see some templates or examples and the process in which to obtain them.
People don't give things away for free. This is the type of info that would be found in the scrap room, or ask some one in a PM. No one is going to give away one of their sources of business on the public forum.Quote:

Also, one thing that anyone in general should understand, that with so many resources readily available on the internet, and all of them for free, there is so many choices to get the information anyone seeks, without needing to pay for it.
I am not knocking the Scrap Room at all. I have heard nothing but great things about the place, just my humble opinion. I do plan myself to become a member more than likely in the near future. As well as a buyer on this forum, which I test the waters for the stuff I sell on my own a little bit more, so I have a strong idea on pricing, and what I can flip it for, and how long it will take me. Take it how you wish.
How hard is it to take a harddrive to an ewaste company and have them issue one to you for the harddrive they destroy. Wouldnt that be a good starting point to make up your own? Unless i dont have an exact understanding of what it is? Dont think its secret info that cant be gotten somewhere besides here. It not like anyone was asking who you buy from where they are and how much you pay so your prices can be undercut.
A simple google search would have put these people in the right direction. Hell it probably would have come back with a few examples. Yet these people rather than do what should be "common sense" took it app on themselves to be lazy and just ask for a hand out.Quote:

2. Research the forum to see if the question has been asked.
3. Ask your buyer if it's a scrap related question as they will always know better than a bunch of random strangers on the internet.
4. Make a thread.
And George if you follow the first 2 rules im sure some of use might start to respect you as a knowledgeable businessman.

Those of you that responded to me get a life. As far as sources go, what sources? Just provide a link so that I can fill out the information it is as simple as that. I am running a business asking others for business advice and like George said this information is for free on this web forum and others websites as well.
Oh and by the way people do give things away for free lol. That is how I get all of my Ewaste lol
What does this mean If you didn't want responses why post questions? Like Drozenski said nothing is for free. You buy it with money or you buy it with research and YOUR time. This is your business. Why should you get a business consultation for free I know my business and do a lot of research on finding out what I don't know. Goolge is a great place to start when you have any question.Quote:

Ill make it real easy for yo if you want a COD. If your talking about data destruction and not physical. Then the wipe software you are using should have this option to print a COD after the wipe is complete. I know the one I have has this function. If your talking physical destruction cert then just type one up yourself. Basicaly your just writing a statment and signing it saying you destroyed the hard drive and that if it shows up in the futre as not being destroyed that company has a right to sue you.
