I want to get as much lead as I possibly can find, ton or more and start casting my 45 air rifle bullets and shotgun loads.
I have heard others state that the old wheel weights made good bullets. I believe the old wheel weights are a mixture of zinc and lead. Mike.
Check with local mechanic shops I work at 1 and when we balance tires we are taking off the old ones to put on new ones and the old ones usually just sit in a bucket next to the wheel balance machine taking up space
Good luck finding lead wheel weights in California. On 1 Jan 2011 California outlawed the use of lead wheel weights. So what used to be almost all lead ww is quickly becoming mostly iron and zinc ww.
For lead check with plumbers, or roofers (some old flashing was lead). Check with scrap yards, although I have heard many scrap yards in California will not sell lead to the public. Check with auto parts yards, some U-Pullet_it places will let you walk through the yard and pull the lead weights off the cars. Check out sail boats, the keels on some of them are lead and can easily weigh over 1000 lbs. If all else fails check eBay or PM me and I will sell you 63 pound boxes of clean lead for $60 shipped.

I'm looking for the exact thing in South Florida. We do use lead wheel weights here but I can't get the tire places to give them up. They all claim they either give them back to the company or have deals with scrap yards. I'll take any lead that doesn't come from batteries and have offered more than the scrap yard's. Still, I can't seem to get anywhere.
Wheel weights contain a lot of contaminates and are not intended to be used for bullets. I would stick to good clean lead if you are casting bullets for safety reasons.
I've been casting for nearly 30 years with wheel weights. Just need to smelt at the correct temp to remove the contaminates.
If you happen to have any junkyards around, or anyone with old (circletrack) race cars in their backyards, the cars your looking for is what we call the street stockers. They look like the older cars off the street made into a racecar. Look under the seat or along the left side frame rail for chunks/bars of lead. They use lots of lead to properly scale the car for racing. The one we built (my son-in-law and I) had about 350 lb's under the seat.
If you would like to get high quality lead cheap, look in your local area for a nuclear medicine service company. There are a huge number of independent service companies throughout the country (I was in the industry not that long ago). The equipment all use lead shielding and many of these companies have tens of thousands of pounds of lead (and other scrap) around. I had a friend in Miami I recently helped scrap over 100,000 pounds of lead and steel. And that was only 1/2 of one of his 2 warehouses. In the past, he had only gotten about 15 cents a pound for his lead. I got him 65 cents. he also had lots and lots of high quality boards as well from 20 year old medical equipment. Do not worry, the lead and other things ARE NOT radioactive or dangerous in any way.
You could also try the Nuclear Medicine Department of your local hospital. They always have lead they want to get rid of. Every big city also has several radiopharmacies (these are not regular pharmacies...they package radioactive drugs for hospitals). They will have a lot of lead also.
Any questions...feel free to PM me.
Someone on here not to long ago had over 300 lbs. of lead he was trying to sell, don't know who it was.
Roof flashing would be my best bet, easy to get for free, its just a pain to try & pick it all off.
Lots of folk selling reclaimed lead here.
Swappin & Sellin - Cast Boolits
Plenty of info on how to hunt it down for yourself too.
Enjoy!
Contact a roofer. They just toss the roof jacks in the trash. When I have time, I will cut off the vertical part. I have lots of lead from this but I am inthe roofing industry. Try contacting a commercial or residential roofer. Offer to pay him or his guys for it. They will produce alot in a short time.
I got about 175 pounds worth in different ingot sizes. Send me a PM if your interested.
my tvs andcrts lol
Check with an indoor shooting range, they capture all the bullets anyway, might get a good deal. The copper jacketed ones would be worth more.
Marina"s usually have alot of it and pay to get rid of it
There is about 160000lbs of it coming up for auction next week in virginia. priobably more than you are looking for and it needs to be mutilated, but its there.
Check with your local water department and see what they do with their old lead goosenecks as they take them out. Back in the day of ductile and cast water mains and galvanized service lines the bend from the main was accomplished with a corp stop and a lead gooseneck. We give them away for bullets all the time.
Babbit Works Like Lead too , You can find it from farmers exc..
But We all like lead for Scrap , i am not Young anymore , but i know of a place that you can chop it out of the rock with a axe , but its on georgian bay in northern ontario , and you also need a boat and someone that knows the waterway as well as where it is.
To late this time of year for me to go back and the wind is to stormy this time of year to chance it again.
If you need a small amount, dentists have to separate the lead foils from x-rays and save them for special disposal. It's not a lot but it is pure lead and I would imagine they would be more than happy to give it to you for free.
well if you need lead i need zinc will trade my lead for your zinc
The hospitals and other X-ray places use lead lined drywall.
I've worked with it before,
it is weird stuff, a drywall sheet with lead sheet glued to it, and heavy as hell.
That would have to come from a demo job I guess.
Check with the shooting range about buying spent bullets maybe(?)
(You could shoot those FMJ .45's that lay all over the range from a smooth-bore (like tyou mentioned, and it would have rifling grooves OR look like fired from several different pistols...)
Other than that ,
for bullets, why not just use a frozen POOP Dart?
What you do is make a mold (large bore, pointy at front /w/hollow tail),
stuff it with pooop and freeze it,
Then keep it in dry-ice until you shoot somebody with it.
That would really suck to be shot and die with a big frozen turd sticking out of the chest I imagine.
The thing that sucks is poop is DNA traceable, (I think ?) so you'd have to use somebody elses'...
It should be powered by atleast a 12 gauge would be BAD @SSS KILLER POOP DART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow dude, now THAT sounds like some kind of super cool adventure trip! Maybe it's something for a few of us to try and hook up for 2013! Seriously, axe'n out your own raw lead, right from the bush and rocks where it grew? I'd Love to spend a week there with you and a couple of others who'd dig this back to the land/pioneer way of living, wrestling money from the ground and on Georgian Bay to boot. We'd have to pack fish'n rods and tackle too of course. :D lb
hi i am looking for lead and was wondering if you still have some to sell please reply
I go to place where people shoot into a bank when I go shooting. On a whim, I took my 2'X4' gold classifing screen (it's a wooden frame with 1/2" mesh stapled to the bottom) and a shovel and scooped up the sandy soil where the bullets impact. In six scoops I had about 20 lbs. of spent bullets. I figure if I stay there for a while, I could quickly get half a ton or so. Be sure to wear a mask if you do this, don't want to breath in any lead dust from the ground.
A list of a couple hundred such places:
List of Nuclear Pharmacies in the United States
The first place I'd look is at roof flashings & lead head nails.
Its a hardish job by hand but the correct sort of tinsnips would work wonders.
A few days ago I was walking past the rear of a shop & noticed some lead head nails on the ground.
So I looked up & yeah, the roof has just been 'redone', brand new roofing
I've been looking all over my area for scrap lead. Haven't found anywhere willing to sell it yet. They all say they're not allowed to, or don't get any.
If anyone has any they'd be willing to sell, please PM me.
lars... I don't think that you have accumulated sufficient posts to send/recive pms. .. I have maybe 300# I could part with. 100 or so ingots and maybe a couple hundred of the x-ray room sheeting.
Oh, I didn't realize that. So many forums, all with different rules. :)
I've stopped by a few tire places, went to recycling centers, called up nuclear pharmacies, etc. All busts... So, that sounds awesome! I have an ingot mold, so whatever you want to part with is cool with me. I'm just looking to avoid ordering 10# ingots for $20 off the net.
Hello. We collect soft lead from Nortel, Avaya, etc. handsets from office phones. Many use lead for weight inside the handset. Usually around 4oz bars in each one. Would work good for smelting. Thanks
Most of the phones I get now have steel weights but I do come across lead weights in some older phones. Down here in Florida fishing is the thing to do and I used to get alot of lead from old fishing nets.
Talk to your local electric company. See if they thow away the hard lead coated wire that stuff is heavy. I have also found lead on the ouside of old light fixtures with the stain glass windows in a circle. Stainless steal door weights usually also have soft lead in them. battery cable ends also.
I am also looking for lead. i could use as much as i can get my hands on for projects im doing here in california. Nobody around here has any. When i've been able to get it ive been paying a very good price, but cant seem to get enough. If any of you have any, please let me know. Im sure it would all have to be shipped to me which is fine. But i cant pm yet cause i am brand new to the site but if you guys can find a way to message me then great, if not just reply here and i can get back to you with a number or something. Thanks guys!!!
i also have a few hundred pounds of scrap aluminum laying around if anybody wants to trade. most of it is dirty, some clean. alot of motorcycle aluminum pistons that have the rings on and some piston pins and clips. but if any of you are interested feel free to let me know
How clean of lead you looking for? There's only four reasons you're going to use it, so there are 4 different degrees you can get/pay for. Doesn't pay to use the good stuff for the cheap versions, and so on. And with A n a l California, is it legal to ship it in? I gotta look into that.
