Part time scrapper
Hello all. I have been reading the forum for a few weeks now and decided to actually register.
My name is Chris. Silverback is a name that stuck when I worked in an HGV garage.
I'm in Glasgow in sunny Scotland (the rain is belting down right now as usual). I'm a full time student after taking a rest from being a mechanic its not worth the aches and pains.
I have done scrapping for a few years, I usually tend to save up various car parts that I accumulate in my line of work. Brake discs, clutch covers, engines, gearboxes etc.
Sadly the UK is far behind the US in regards to scrapping, not easy to find those that will pay for e-waste etc.
Scrap has had itsd ups and downs for me. I recall in 2004 or so taking 900 kg's of light iron in and getting just £7 for it, yes SEVEN pounds Sterling.
I also recall having to move over 100 car batteries in 2008, I read in America this was a massive pay day. I collected them no yards woudl take them. In the end I paid to actually scrap them.
You get money for them now of course.
I also have got luycky in the boom a couple of years ago, £350 a ton it was at once.
Anyway just introducing myself and saying hi.

Cool! Welcome to SMF :) What's an HGV garage? Don't feel so bad about some of it, recently as 06 I gave away several hundred pounds of high grade motherboards because no recyclers wanted such a "small load", and the landfill sure didn't want it. Since that's started coming together here that would've a $1000 or so, I needed to do something with it though because I was getting ready to make a rather large move.

Welcome, Silverback. Yes, in 2008, I started selling scrap batteries. Then, 100 batteries would have gotten me $1,000 (622.22 pounds).

Welcome to the forum, you have the desire to succeed. Perhaps you could become a major player in Scotland in the ewaste market. If no one else is in it take some time to read the electronics section front to back and that will get you get you started. Best of luck, Mike.
