Becoming competition
Just almost got kicked out of my local scrap yard, I normally bring in my steel and such once a day and while im there i talk to the other scrappers and tend to purchase any ewaste that they are going to sell as steel. well today i get there fork lift is down so everyone's just standing around and i notice one guys truck bed loaded with monitors. tell him i buy them, good got them, them my regular drops me another 6 while im still waiting to scale my stuff. finally everyone in the yard is getting my number because they realize my prices were higher. So im giving out my number and name to everyone and the window clerk comes out and says if she catches me buying anything else im banned from the yard. Pretty lame so im gonna really go to walmart today and get the business cards cause with that kind of responses i cant give up now. Im proud i got notice as a threat to a medium sized scrap yard. Just proves all the stuff i learned on here makes you ahead of the game and the scrap yards disapprove of it.

Dunemaul-
Have you spoken with the owner of the facility about selling you the e-scrap that comes in as steel? I'd attempt to pursue a partnership rather than competition. I don't allow my drivers to hand out cards if they are making a delivery to another yard, any business that comes out of a stunt like that is going to cost me much more than it is worth in the long run.

This is something that really PO's me with yards. If you try to talk to them business to business, they wont give you the time of day. "Oh we don't sell, we buy", "You need to talk to head office - a million miles away", "We're not interested in dealing locally".
All responses I've had. Buy some stuff off the other scrappers while waiting 30 trucks deep at the scale, and you're an outcast. I stick to handing out cards now, and sometimes a price list. I understand they want to protect their monopoly, but just don't get why they refuse to deal with a local processor and make more money. I attribute a lot of this to the demise of the small independent yards.
Don't give up Dunemaul. Like you said the demand is there. And as you know scrappers like to talk and word will get out you buy for more money.

HLH&R yes i have and offered them higher prices then what they are getting ans still refuse to sell to me. Hell i offered to work on a commission with him when he was starting to do only computers and throwing out RAM and Processors, still nothing. I tried to help this yard out and since they weren't interested ill grab everyone i can. Devo people that buy scrap around here is a new thing. most scrappers are danm glad to meet me and i get alot of word to mouth business cause of it.

Looks like you covered your bases. Good hunting!

HLH&R - I owe you an apology. In my post above I painted scrap yards with a pretty wide brush. I know not all yards operate with a total lack of respect for the small scrappers and businesses out there. Your posts on this forum are proof that there are still good yards out there.
-
No need to apologize Devo, we fall into the "small, independent yard" category...we came out of your post looking great!
-
Put the price list on the back of the business cards. I put a liability waiver and sign the back of the cards we give out.

Hey Dune!! I think you said in another post that you pay 2.00 per tv/crt. I can get as many tv's as you can handle, !.00 ea if you pick up or 2.00 deliverd. They are in Pinelas Co. just north of St. Pete. This offer is good for anyone in west cenrtal Fl.

I have offered to buy electronics and computers from my local yard that does not accept them. They could make money as well as myself so I left a business card
with 3 yards. 1 out of the 3 gives out my number on a regular basis. The other 2, I could care less and no longer do business with. The yard that does give out
my number has netted me a telecom guy!! just that guy alone is worth it!! They have also landed me complete working lap-tops from folks who thought their laptops
were to old or out dated. I'll send people their way and buy the crew lunch just for the telecom guy alone.

I've been chasing one yard owner for several weeks now - can't seem to get ahold of him.
I've been at one yard that doesn't take computers and handed out my flyers -I heard about all kinds of pcs people had, but then they never did call me ......frustrating.

yeah that happens alot to me, they know they are throwing away computer stuff but dont really care. Usually once they come loaded to my place once and walk out with like 200-400$ do they become regulars.
