Searched old threads and scrap monster has no price so here goes...brought in a couple of sealed units from a/c's and some brake drums, got #1 iron price .16# for all of it. Does this sound right? I thought that sealed units would have been priced differently?
Some yards buy compressors at shred price but there is a separate scrap catagory for them. Some of the guys are getting .36 a pound for them.
Thanks Joe...live and learn should have done some homework first I guess. Have to check with other yard I deal with. Glad it was only two small ones.
I'd open the compressor up, if your going to take the time to drain the oil out anyhow might as well... I did my first one the other day and I was amazed how easy it was, and bummed I hadn't tried sooner.
They are listed as sealed units or compressors by me. Last time I got .15 a pound for them
Bout how much, on average, copper is in them compressors ? Been selling them for 15 cents a pound and have been wondering if its worth the hassle to gut em
Not sure tater but I got another one today and I am cutting open to find out thie time.
Scrapyaherd- if you do that then you get mtr price if you don't cut windings out correct?

Same with every motor out there. Each new motor produced has different amounts of copper.
Years ago the copper used to produce 1 hp in a motor is much more then what is needed now.
Some compressors are a great joy to open up and reap the harvest yet others are nothing but aluminum disappointment.
Then again the numbers tell a story.
Tater, this is from last November on refrigerator compressors.
Missed the last few weeks of breaking down compressors so I started on a few of them today. Got through 40 compressors (810 pounds). Took 5 hours, seems to take longer when it's cold outside! Got 12 pounds of oil and 64 pounds of copper windings. Still have a little over 100 compressors to go but most of them are from a/c's. Not my favorite ones to do because so many of them have copper clad aluminum windings

Injunjoe, I've found so far that just about all the Copeland and Bristol a/c compressors are copper, all the G.E. have been aluminum and most of the oddball ones are aluminum too.
Goes to show you can't beat a Copeland! And you can't stop a Train/Trane
Can't you sell the aluminum, less than copper better than shred. just asken.
Yes after all the hardship of cutting open the compressor only to find Aluminum windings you can sell them but it would seem as if they are light as a feather and pay about half as much as down is worth for making pillows, only to find they are not nearly as soft!Quote:
